| Broadband Cable Modem Internet access in the UK |
Broadband wireless satellite internet - worldwide beam coverages |
How it works:
If you have a cable television service along your road then you can
have a broadband cable modem internet service.
The installer extends the cable from the footpath up to your house and typically in through a window ledge or wall fitting.
Indoors the cable is plugged into either a cable modem, or a Cable TV set top box or both using a splitter. If you already have Cable TV then no new cable from the street is needed - also the service is lower cost if you already subscribe to Cable TV.
The computer side of the cable modem is a CAT5 ethernet cable and this needs to be plugged to your computer or local router. If you have more than one computer locally then see below on how to use a router.
Performance:
I have had the service for 3 years since Dec 2001 and am delighted. The
download speed is in the order of 500 kbit/s. I am very pleased with it.
Price:
£29.99 per month or less if you have cable TV service simultaneously.
Connecting up many local computers:
If you want to use cables then use an ethernet cable type router.
Each computer will need a 10/100 network card.
If you want to use wireless then use wireless router. Each computer will need a wireless card.
It will almost always be cheaper to have a cable modem or ADSL telephone line connection rather than a broadband satellite internet connection, essentially because a shared cable in the road is much less costly than a satellite transponder.
