Hi I'd like some info about cost (initial and recurring) for Internet access and speeds available in Costa Rica - - that is for the area around amout 20 miles south of La Fortuna near Arenal.

The issue is that it's in a rain forest area (need I say more:) and given the high rain densities in that region, what kind of performance can one expect?

In the US when it rains hard, we lose our satellite connection; or are there large-dish solutions available?

Thanks,  Jerry

Hi Jerry,
see  https://www.satsig.net/ivsat.htm
This shows the footprint maps for your area with the companies concerned.
Even in the UK we get bad satellite reception at Ku band when there is heavy rain.
A bigger Ku dish will help, make sure is aligned correctly and supported correctly.

Satmex 5 has a C band beam over Costa Rica which is worth investigating.  C band suffers less from rain attenuation, but needs larger dish.

Gracias,

We have internet dishes around Lake Arenal .  The dish we use is a 2.4m and can operate in very heavy rain .  The K2 transonder on Satmex 5 will run with a little 1.2m dish but not in the rain .

Call if you want to speak with one of our happy customers . We have been putting in dishes all over Costa Rica for almost 11 years now and have more than 1,000 installations of various satellite products under our belt here .

We are down near Dominical (N of Osa Peninsula).  Are there any geographic exclusivities that an ISP might have that would stop me from choosing whatever Satellite Internet service I want?

bschmidt,

You might want to study the satellite signal foot prints as it relates to vsat earth stations Eric has here on this site well as many other sites. both bands(c/ku)
Then you could approach service providers with knowledge.
Don, as posted above as well as others serve the CR area. I work with another iDirect distributor myself that works in the CR area.
And in a short answer to your question ,yes there are limits to what you want based on where you are located.
What service are you asking for would get you a quick answer.

we would like to help you out if you were more specific on your questions.

Hi,
Does anyone know what is the satellite name or names people use in Costa Rica? We need the satellite name so we can buy the right receiver. Any information would be appreciated.
Also what type of receiver and modem would be right for the whole equipment.
Thnx.
Tony

In keeping with the intent of the request . We offer the best of the best in rain performance with up to a 3.0 m offset one piece dish . We start with a 1.8m and then a 2.4m dish to very hard rain service with a 3.0m with a 4 watt BUC .

Hope this helps .

Hi

I have a number of questions about TV and internet in Costa Rica.
I
’m looking at buying a place in Costa rica and am investigating costs.

I’d like an idea of the costs for hardware, installation and time frames to get TV in the Cahuita area.

I’ve found out that vsat is illegal but have seen all the two-way kit everywhere not even out of site.
Same questions as for the TV but this time for the provision for an internet service install.

I need answers regarding the fact it is illegal.
Who has to get the kit in country?
What happens if you get court with it on your property?
The type of usage would be surfing the web, email and VOIP possible for up to 5 PC’s.

Regards

Andy

In this case you should ask Don Paul whom already keeps this stuff in inventory, and he makes custom antennas for this purpose in Southern Costa Rica.

Email him at stardish1 [at] yahoo [dot] com

I think that you should call Don Paul directly and ask him these questions - he lives in South CR for many years now, and keeps inventory in country.

You can find his info >> www.dbstv.com > Partners > Filter for Costa Rica > Find Dr. Dish / Don Paul
