Title: Latency problem solved ?
Post by eddie on Dec 12th, 2005 at 1:59pm
Does anyone have any actual hands-on experience of using satellite broadband to download streaming data from financial sites.

Some people say it won't work because of signal latency, others say it's no longer a problem.

Similarly, does latency still cause problems when trying to access secure sites like online banking.

Although I don't use financial sites myself, we have a client who does without any problem.
The data will stream over happily but it will arrive approx 600 to 800 ms after it is sent.
Most of this data is carried over TCP/IP which works well on satellite.

Thanks  for your response guardianbox.     That's useful to know.   I wasn't sure if I was just getting sales talk when some of the vendors said it wouldn't be a problem.

Just to answer the "secure-site" part: yes, you'll find that accessing secure sites is substantialy slower then accessing "normal" websites. This is because (since SSL is point-to-point) it is bypassing the extended features that reduce latency in the box (aka connection spoofing).

We are working on implementing real HTTPS prefetching (which will be a software update) but this is still some time away.
