Title: WildBlue?
Post by cypher543 on Aug 31st, 2006 at 3:32am
I currently get satellite internet from a small Starband reseller. Lately, their service has been all but satisfactory. I had looked at WildBlue before going with my current ISP, but a local dealer said that sales in the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri area was not offered at the moment. My current ISP has been having problems with DNS and such that are seriously affecting my freelance web design jobs and various web projects I have going.

I'd love to switch to WildBlue, because of my current problems and because of their Fair Access Policy. My current ISP limits my downloading to 500MB a month. I'm a "power downloader", so that doesn't work well for me. I do a lot of programming, and a lot of programming tools and SDKs are well over 100MB. I've gone over this limit many times. WildBlue has a nice 2.3GB FAP. That would work quite well for me.

Anyway, my questions are:
1. Does anyone know when they will begin offering WB in my area (Benton County, Missouri, 65338)?
2. How is the WB service?
3. Is their tech support good?
4. Can I run a server on it? I'd like to run Apache w/PHP and MySQL for some local web programming tests.
5. Any advice you can give me?

Thanks!

1. Not likely 'til maybe 2-3 months after a successful WB1 launch and positioning, currently scheduled for November.

2. subjective question; depends upon the expectation of the subscriber. Ask a dozen customers, you'll get a dozen different answers

3. The first tier or two of WB support is outsourced. Draw your own conclusion.

4. No. Terms of service prohibit servers on consumer grades of service

5. Check back with them on the possibility that you might be in a beam overlap area. If so, you might also have mutual visibility with a beam that's yet closed to new subscribers.

wildblue will be available in your area possibly by the end of the month. if not it will be almost for sure the first week of march 07.
