Title: Satellite Internet and NGN
Post by Legal_Alien on Sep 22nd, 2006 at 8:08pm
As we start to see WiFi being used to share VSAT connections what about the use of satellite in an NGN context - where users can roam from say a WiMAX link onto a satellite link similar to the way in which a Globalstar user can connect either to wireless or satellite.  But that is just voice - now we have internet via satellite, will we see a satellite data card for the PC?  Or will we need to connect via a wireless connection first?  What do people think/know about this?

You need to have a dish to receive satellite signals, so a simple PC card isn't going to be enough.

The real issue to be discussed, and of real concern to many on this forum is that pending proposals for WiMax frequencies conflict with existing C-band satellite service frequencies.  This could be a major problem in the future, particularly in tropical/equatorial regions where rainfall during certain parts of the year is such that C-band is the only reliable service.  C-band satellite service is not ready to be retired, but unless the frequency issues are sorted out, there could be significant conflicts in the future, leading to counter-productive results that could make it more difficult instead of less difficult for certain areas in places like central Africa, lacking Internet access, to gain it through VSAT service.

Anyone operating satellite C band services now or planning new services should contact their country regulatory authority and urge them to attend ITU preparatory and WRC 2007 conference, and prevent C band frequencies being reassigned for other purposes.  See https://www.satsig.net/itu/c-band-spectrum.htm

Best regards, Eric.
