Title: Satellite Broadband in a Motorhome?
Post by azwebs on May 21st, 2007 at 2:44pm
Hi, I know I'm pretty new here, but I just have a couple of questions to ask.

I have a Rapido 7098F, and I run a business from home. As I don't have a phone line, so can't get DSL/ADSL, I need some way of getting up to 16MB Broadband in my motorhome.

I recently heard of satellite broadband, but wanted to know its capabilities and any other information that you think would be useful to know. I am in the UK, and tour many places where broadband is required.

The dish needs to be portable, so either concealed in my motorhome, or when I stop, I can take it out and assemble it for broadband access. If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful. My email is admin.azwebs@googlemail.com. Thanks very much.

Hello azwebs

do you have at least a gprs phone line to use one way satellite services?

Two way satellite connection for mobile usage could be quite expensive.

Unfortunately, I've just moved out and I have no broadband. I understand that satellite broadband cannot match the speeds of ADSL/DSL. I will be able to get used to this, as my server is located at a facility with two 64Mb broadband connections. I just need to be able to access it.

I have checked out 3G, but it wont work for me. It has a 10GB Max Usage on any service, and I need at least 70GB Bandwidth. This means my broadband must also be unlimited. Do you have any qoutations for cost, or any recommendations, because I'm completely new to satellite broadband.

My connection needs to be two way, and as fast as possible really. My company is internet-based, and I'm currently tied down to my server facility (I've hooked up a DIY phone line to my motorhome). If you have any suggestions, please tell me.

Hi Azwebs,

To have a satellite antenna inyour motor home and when you need to use it have to take out the antenna and go through the pointing and aligning ritual  is a pain in the bottom :), something you can look into is an auto deploy antenna, with this you can have it mounted on the top of your vehicle, once you need to use the internet you will be in a position to press a small green button and the antenna automatically finds the satellite points and is setup to work in obout 5 mins.  There are a few companies that have succesfully done this and the one that I have seen in Dubai at the CABSAT exhibition looked really good.  Theie web address is www.direcstar-europe.com.

Good Luck.

Hi

We (phly ltd) are shortly to launch motorhome internet as part of our new motorhome sky tv package. The system will be fully automatic - just switch it on and watch satellite telly or log onto broadband internet using a gprs uplink. The costs are low, similar to normal internet at home and you can purchase blocks of a couple of months - for example if your on hols you dont want to pay for a whole year. We are finalising it, but we are confident it will pick up sky tv, uk terrestrial and free to air and internet, throughout western europe, possibly touching morroco, east of germany etc.

then new website will be up soon, jamie is writing it. either check the website (google for phly) or write to sales@phly.co.uk if you want any more info.
