Title: C to Ku band: Does the dish matter?
Post by janewanjiru on Jul 13th, 2007 at 3:40pm
I have a C-band dish 2.4m, 5 Watt BUC and C-band LNB.  I would like to convert to a Ku-band service, but would like to continue using the large dish - can I simply change the LNB and BUC to those suitable for the Ku-band link - but keep the very same dish.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Jane

You need to change the whole feed assembly from cband to ku - feed horn, buc, lnb.

Thanks, Sir, the important thing is that I can keep the 2.4 dish which is very expensive to import.

Hi Jane,

As far as I know converting C-Band to Ku-Band is not generally a good idea as Ku-Band reflectors are usually manufactured with a higher precision surface than C-Band. A 2.4m C-Band antenna converted to Ku may not be equivalent to a new 2.4m Ku-Band antenna, although please do not think I am discouraging you to give it a try. As the poster above noted, you'll need to change the whole feed along with the outdoor electronics - LNB and BUC and that should do the job.

hello Jane

The" band "is all about frequencies.the high the freq of operation the smaller the size of antenna.for your system to operate.you will have to change the radio unit(lnb buc and the feed).it has worked in EA region depending on the provider.and you can actually resell the existing lnb buc and the feedhorn.

one point to make clear:
What Maxim wrote is right; the reflector as well is usually different from C band dishes to Ku dishes. The reason is that the length of Ku waves is shorter, and therefore the reflector itself should be finer. Just like a grain of sand for a person could be like a rock for an ant...

maybe dishes are fabricated to the same quality for C and Ku band, but it should not be taken for granted. trying to modify c band to ku could lead to poor performance.
