Title: II+ to iNfiniti via SCPC
Post by Lukio on May 12th, 2008 at 9:09am
Hi All,

Does anyone know, or tried, to get a II+ talking to an iNfiniti via SCPC.  I am about to have play to see if I can do it but was interested to know if anyone has tried.
Bear in mind the II+ will be running iDS5.0.5 and the iNfiniti iDS7.0.2 for example.

Thanks ;.)

Lukio

I honestly don't know if this will work.  I believe it should, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it.

First, you are supposed to have the 4200 version which includes licensing for iSCPC.  If you don't have it, the cost is such that you can buy a new 5100 for less than the upgrade.

Second, the PPS (packet per second) forwarding capability of the NM2+ is very limited.  The Infiniti doesn't have a lot of horsepower either.  Don't try to use this on a large circuit or you'll waste your money as the modems won't be able to fill the pipe. VoIP or other small-packet traffic will greatly reduce the size of the supported circuit.

You will have to go with the least common denominator in terms of modulation and frame size.  I could be wrong, but I don't think the NM2 supports 8PSK or 7/8 framing.

This is probably worth a try for a small circuit (512 x 256) or something like that.  If you plan to put it on a circuit with over 1Mbps, I'd strongly recommend using a pair of Infinitis.  In any case, depending on the traffic profiles you don't want to use this solution on large multimegabit circuits unless you have a way to confirm that all the packets will be large.

Let us know how it works...

Hey thanks for the reply.  Data rates over this link are very small anyway - 64Kbps so I shouldn't need to be concerned about data loss.
It's more of an experiment really - in theory I think this should work so will give it a whirl and see what happens.  I know the standard II+ aren't great at SCPC due to them not having the ovenized oscillator.
Anyway, I'll have a crack and see what happens....will let you know ;.)

Lukio.

One other consideration, I think the lowest supported iSCPC speed at least for Infiniti is 128 Kbps.

Make sure you use a PLL LNB.
