Title: Tooway Ku Band Installs
Post by mark_bk on Jul 18th, 2008 at 2:20pm
Has anyone any experience with Ku Band installs using Eurobird 3 East 33?

I've managed (with help) to get the 96cm dish aligned using TV broadcasts (Horizontal).

I'm informed that the polorisation if Vertical.

The LNB is type NJR2784HH for Ku band.

The modem has the 'yellow/gold' surfbeam logo which denotes Ku band.

I've used a horizon hex file sent by BW for the Ku band - it doesn't shift off 62/63%.

Location - Crete.

Any advice welcome,
Regards
Mark

This is the first Ku band Tooway site I have heard about.

Please try this page satellite-tv-dish-pointing-greece to get your pointing angles.  If you can help edit my Greek text that would also be very much appreciated.

For polarisation...   If you have been told to receive vertical polarisation you need to intitally rotate your feed assembly so that the rectangular waveguide going into the LNB has its broad faces on top and underneath.

The next step is that you must apply the polarisation adjustment angle.  In your case perhaps - 11 deg.   This means turn the feed 11 deg anticlockwise while facing towards the satellite.

If you are doing an initial attempt to find the satellite using a TV carrier on Horizontal polarisation you need the feed at 90 deg to the above.

Does the Tooway modem lock up on the satellite that you are pointed at right now ?  If not, try adjacent satellites either way.

Best regards, Eric.

Thanks for the advice - the -11deg is the same as BW have suggested.

We pointed the dish using TV signals as a guide and locked on with a good signal. The supplied dish is an Andrews Lightweight 96cm.

I'll have another go at it today.

First of all thanks for the advice given already.

The situation with the installation remains the same. A good signal from E3 which displays TV broadcasts using a standard LNB (Horizontal) but nothing above 62% meter reading with the Tooway LNB attached.

Just to confirm:
the LNB is an INVACOM VSAT Integrated LNB & Filter
NF 0.7db
LO 9.75 / 10.6 GHz
NJR2784HH

The dish is a circular Andrews 96cm lightweight version.

The modem shows power on, and appears to 'ranging' with slow regular flashes.

Any advice, pointers or information would be appreciated.
If you are able to recommend engineers who could assist, please forward details.
Thanks
Mark

RX LED

1 sec slow blink shows it is trying to acquire the downlink carrier.
0.5 sec fast blink shows ranging / registration in progress.
0.125 sec very fast flashing is a power-on-self-test fault indication.

TX LED

Will flash when attempting ranging / registration.

Read the 550k pdf file here
https://www.cpe-labs.com/PDFs/SkyVistaPDFs/SurfBeam%20Modem%20Manual.pdf

Did the service provider definitely preconfigure the tuning?.   Ask them and verify the name of the downlink polarisation.

Probably wrong satellite, wrong polarisation or wrong tuning config.

If you are supposed to be receiving vertical your LNB will be at one side, either a little up on the right or down on the left as viewed from behind the dish and facing towards the satellite.  i.e. -11 deg anticlockwise from nominal start position.

Eric,
thanks for the link to the Manual. Interesting reading, and it should be 'included in the box'.

My pol. is now confirmed as Horizontal (with between -8 - -11 offset)

I'm trying to confirm with the provider (BW) whether or not the modem tuning was pre-configured.

Thanks again,
Mark

Just an update. Both systems now fully functional.

Sat dish bearing/pointing, elevation and polorisation were all correct as confirmed by a couple of external engineers (including Frits, El Molino Systems).

It appears that something - perhaps a glitch - at Eutelsat end was not initially performing as expected to extend coverage as far south as Crete.  Anyway, that is now resolved and as stated above the systems are fully operational.

Thanks to all those who helped or offered advice.
Regards
Mark (in Crete)
