Title: iDirect routers with 2.4 kernel
Post by cylent on Sep 26th, 2008 at 2:20pm
hello all.

i find it a bit rather amazing that iDirect is stuck in the 2.4 kernel era.
2.6 has many new features that it offers for networking and it would help (1) keep up with the times and (2) bring new elements to the router (modem).
I did notice the 2.4 kernel they have on the infiniti series is patched for ipv6 support but i know of no one even using ipv6.

I also noticed that on the new x3 in the manual it refers to the images as Darwin.
The only Darwin name i know of are those of the MAC OSX x86 version being known as Darwin. Are there any ties to that or is this just a creative name iDirect is using?  ((i hope they dont get sued by apple if they just decided to be creative))

I cant comment on the kernel.

On the Infiniti modems the iDirect service is called Falcon. On the Evolution series its called Darwin - I guess since Darwin first suggested the theory of evolution. How can anyone have rights to someone else's name as you suggest?

I havent engaged the eVOLUTION platforms (yet) but as soon as the software (and hardware) matures up I am sure I will get some time on a platform.

when i was doing an upgrade to my modem today i found three folders.

Remote_Darwin
Remote_Evolution
Remote_iNFINITI

in Remote_Darwin i found:

cumulative_update-9.0.0.5.pkg
evo_x3_rmt-9.0.0.5.pkg

in Remote_Evolution i found:

evo_bsp-9.0.0.5.pkg
evo_d_rmt-9.0.0.5.pkg
evo_l_rmt-9.0.0.5.pkg

and the iNFINITI folder we dont care about

now i dont know what the Evolution folder with the 3 pkg files are for... i did my upgrade using the Remote_Darwin folder

anyone?

nevermind.

i found my answer in the guide: https://www.talia.net/support/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=downloadfile&downloaditemid=74  (Remote installation and commissioning guide)

the answer is in section 2.2, page 9.

2.2 Components of the iSite Software and Remote Modem Images
Currently, the Images for iDirect NetModem and Satellite Router remote modem products are
bundled together, in addition to the iSite software.
• The NMS iSite program and support files
• The NetModem II Remote Modem application and image files
• The NetModem II Plus Remote Modem application and image files
• The iNFINITI Remote Modem application and image files
The Evolution X3 Remote Modem application and image files (under Darwin)
• The Evolution E8350 Remote Modem application and image files (under Evolution)
A directory structure similar to the following will be created when the files are uncompressed:
NetModem-<version>/
iSite/
Images
Remote_2plus
Remote_iNFINITI
Remote_NM2
Remote_Darwin
Remote_Evolution

go figure. why they didnt just call the evolution folder for the evolution modem.
