Title: KA-SAT - Upgrade path??
Post by Broadband-Algarve on Oct 1st, 2009 at 1:53pm
Talking about KA-SAT coming on board next year.

What happens with all us existing users on the Tooway ka or ku.  Will we be offered an upgrade path or will we be expected to purchase new hardware etc in order to use the new service?  It would be a shame not to make use of the increased upload/download speeds which are supposed to be on offer.

If you dont want to take that risk, just wait till end next year (?) when new products are available. But ...... it will happen again and again and again, technology does not stop today :):) and what can you expect of a product of 395,00 euro ?

It seems to me that one of the big problems getting VSAT systems to work well is the skill needed by installers to comprehend and set up linear polarised systems at the correct polarisation angle.  Poor accuracy leads to transmit interference and service problems in the years ahead with frequency reuse when traffic on both polarisations exists.  There is too much pressure on installers to rush the job and hub staff don't have the time to spend 15 - 30 minutes doing CW cross-pol tests for every install.  In Tooway there are reports of no testing being done at all.

I believe that Tooway and KaSat are wrong to have chosen linear polarisation. They should have chosen circular polarisation instead, like Wildblue.  There (in US and Canada) customer sites either work perfectly or not at all and there is no adjustment angle to apply or cross-pol interference problem.  Comments welcome.

Best regards, Eric.
