Title: Space segment or DTH platform for a TV Channel
Post by comedychiru on Dec 23rd, 2009 at 8:14am
Hi all,

I am not so good at technical stuff of satellite TV or DTH channels. But basically I can understand them. Please, If anyone out there can answer these questions, It would be great for me.

I wish to launch a television channel over AU, NZ, US, UK etc And for that
1. Where can I purchase or contract a Space segment from?.
2. What would be the pricing for the Space segment?. I am actually looking for pricing terms.
3. Can we compare the bandwidths and the costs involved in the Satellite Broadband internet to that of the Satellite TV or a DTH TV channel.?

I do not wana write any more questions now. But any kind of replies are very welcome.

Thank you.

I suggest you spend some time learning about the options DTV, IP-TV etc.  There is an annual Broadcast conference/exhibition in Amsterdam with visiting. https://www.ibc.org/

If you want a text book about satellite communications I recommend:

Satellite Communications Systems by Barry Evans.

Consider buying from USA US$.
Consider buying from UK GB£.

Order the above book via Amazon and I get a small commission.

You will need seperate leases of satellites and satellite beams for each specific downlink coverage area.  You also need to lease transmission capacity (cable or satellite) to get to an uplink teleport site for each satellite.  Where does your program material originate ?  Is it real time or are you planning a play-out service where multiple uplink teleport sites could use a playout server and the video delivered by courier.

Think about having coverage in one area only and learn from that experience.

If you are aiming for a service paid for by the viewers think about how your program might be merged with other TV channels so all your customers don't need to buy new dishes and receivers.  In Europe, talk to Astra and Eutelsat about uplinking your program from their teleport. You will have an immediate potential audience of millions.

Direct from any satellite operator, e.g. Asiasat, Intelsat, Eutelsat etc or from someone who has already leased capacity and is reselling spare capacity they find they can't use themselves.

Here are some cheap example transponder leasing prices  Note that prices vary according to satellite power, beam coverage, frequency band, length of lease, age of satellite etc.    Say, about $7000 per month per MHz nominal.

Yes. It is all "transponder lease" - uplink sensitivity,  downlink power and bandwidth.  It costs the same if you use it for internet access or DTH satellite television.

Think about quality and cost.  High definition TV video costs far more then internet video like Youtube.  If you have millions of viewers you need a broadcast service so you only need to transmit it once.   If you have 10 viewers then a PC server feeding 10 duplicate and simultaneous programs via the internet might suffice.

Best regards, Eric.
