Title: directv satellite footprint?
Post by hlaudio on Mar 2nd, 2010 at 7:53pm
Hello,  Am considering installing DirecTV system at 12N, -68W.  Does this area fall in the footprint of DirecTV satellites?  I have performed the Lat/Long install program and find that I am able to aim at the sats.  I wonder if DirecTV transmits a controlled pattern?  Thanks, Harold

Without an impractically large dish, folks at 12N are probably stuck with DirecTV/Latin America . Here's DTV/US coverage: https://www.kvh.com/footprint/tracvision_maps/map_directv_us.asp
And here's DTV/LA coverage: https://www.kvh.com/footprint/tracvision_maps/map_directv_la.asp

Thanks Greg,  I found this web site... https://www.n2yo.com/?s=36131|32729|31862|29494|28659|28238|26985|25937|22930  It shows all Directv sats footprints.  I was/am hoping that I could receive North American programming.  Dish size is no problem.  What do you think?  Harold

I think you're misinterpreting what that link represents. Just because a satellite might physically be overhead, is not necessarily consistent with you being under it's geographic area of coverage. The two links I provided depict that coverage. You're not anywhere near the US footprint. But if Latin American DirecTV is acceptable, there is reasonable coverage over 12N/68W

As far as US coverage, I think you're reaching. Look again at https://www.kvh.com/footprint/tracvision_maps/map_directv_us.asp . Note that the the size of the dish required nearly doubles from the red line to the green line. I'll speculate that if any usable signal at all reaches the northern Venezuela coast, you'd probably need something in the neighborhood of a 4 to 5 meter dish.

Thanks again Greg!  I'm just not satisfied with DirecTV/Latin.  Very few HD channels and fewer English.  I have found that DirecTV is using their first sat for this region.  It's surprising that they still use it for Midwestern local channels and Latin American channels.  Just wish I could provide my clients with US DirecTV channels. Oh well, what's a guy to do???  Harold
