Title: Download rate impared even with 92 sig strength
Post by Tank on Jun 9th, 2010 at 8:40am
I have a HX Connect system with 512/128 link.  I commissioned the dish on 20th May and had been receiving 310/200 (varied results).  But then on the 6th I attempted to fine tune system to gain better receive sign (was 89-91), but after prolonged fine tuning it do get up to 92-93%.  But my speed test showed much worse results 100/30  an my ping test reflect an "F".

I have sent 2 emails to James at BW with no response, multiple emails to WAFA (Anshul, Support and Kamal).  And I just fired off another email in short stating that I have been having good signal strength on my end, so it has to be something on the distant end with the NOC.

I keep getting responses back from Wafa stating that the issue is being worked on, but no results are seen from my end.  This has been going on for 4 days now.  The only improvement I have been noticing is my upload rate has increased at times...but download :(

I KNEW I should have left well enough alone and not touched the dish, but thought that I could have gotten sig strength higher than 92%.  That way, no one could say that their reasoning for throttling me back would be because of my poor dish alignment.  I have a feeling that the NOC did throttle me back while I was fine tuning dish on the 6th (simply because there were times that the signal would drop to 15-40 for a few brief moments).  But I managed to come out on top with a better sig strength, but worse speedtest rates. :((

Some suggestions would be nice!

If your service slows down at times it would be worth checking your FAP traffic status see: https://www.bentley-walker.com/fapdetails/   If you have exceeded a traffic threshold (i.e. lots of recent downloading or uploading) your speeds may be temporarily restricted until the end of the current 8 hour period. (At least, I think that is how it works !).

I would also try ping speed tests with other servers.  To evaluate just the satellite link you need a server at or near to the teleport hub (e.g. Turin, pick it on the speedtest map).
From here in the UK (10Mdownload, 500k upload) my results are:
London: 37mS 9.85M 390k
Turin: 50mS 9.83M 430k (near your HX teleport)
Doha: 345mS 3.57M 270k (the one you used)

You could also try my satsig speed tester, but that is in London, so for you it adds on the terrestrial link from Italy to London.

Don't run too many speed tests or long ping sessions as this wastes your Mbyte alloances, as does any virus.  Set large downloads, such as software updates, to occur at night. If you do any video or audio, choose lowest resolution etc to minimise the bit rates. Bentley Walker/WAFA offer a turbo accelerator software package you can run on your PC which optionally compresses the images you see on web pages and also compresses text files such as htm pages and large text file transfers.

While you were repointing the dish, the hub computers will have detected level changes (both up and down) and tried to compensate, as though you were experiencing a heavy rain storm.  The system will try hard to keep you working, even with severe rain degradation, by temporarily altering bit rates and modulation methods.  Drops in the signal below 30 represent loss of carrier lock. The modem will take second or two to relock when the signal level improves.

Eric ~ I went to speedtest.net and did my test and got 0.10Mbps for Download and 0.06Mbps for Upload and a ping time of 1010 ms.  I picked the server in Doha.

I know that I have things good on my end.  I have a 92 receive signal on the modem, TxCode 8 and RxCode 5, along with no real alarms/faults on any of the other stats that I can see on all the tabs through the modem.

The only think I can think of is that the NOC changed something for my site and never changed it back.

I run a constant ping 208.67.216.231 -t (google website) and it ranges from 856ms - 2649ms.  I followed one of your other threads and I tried to ping www.satsig.net and every ping timed out.  I tried to do a trace route and every one of those came up with stars (timed out).

I am at a loss for what to do.  I've contacted Wafa Support and BW support.  both entities state they are working the issue, but it's been 4 days.

If you test to the Doha server you are adding a link from Italy to Doha to the connection, so the measurement is only partly related to your satellite link. Try servers in Italy.

Due to our recent network and server re-configuration, your ping won't reach www.satsig.net and tracert will fail as it gets close. They are blocked; it is not as fault.

Did your FAP status show anything ?

Best regards, Eric.

I am not a "Bentley Walker" customer.  I am a WAFA customer so I am not able to see this FAP.  I don't know what serial number the website is referring to.  I entered every SN I can think of with no luck.
