Post by europe-satellite.com on Aug 27th, 2011 at 3:08pm
Launch date Hylas-2, 02-08-2012

For the latest news, https://www.avantiplc.com/news/press-releases/hylas-2-launch-confirmed-2-august-2012

Avanti new Hylas-2 beam covering Europe, the Middle East (including Afghanistan & Iraq) and Africa (Egypt) from the third quarter 2012

Details:

The HYLAS 2 satellite will carry 24 active Ka-band user beams and four gateway beams, and will produce approximately 5.0 kilowatts of payload electrical power. The Ka-band spot beams will provide two-way communications services to facilitate high-speed delivery of data to end-user applications such as corporate networking, broadband Internet access, business continuity services and video distribution. Using the HYLAS 2 spacecraft, Avanti will provide its data and video services to Northern and Southern Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. In addition, the spacecraft will be equipped with a steerable spot beam, also operating at Ka-band, which can provide coverage anywhere on Earth that is visible to the satellite.

Impossible. It can not cover West Asia / Afghanistan from 34 degrees West. Avanti will announce official orbital slot sometime before the launch.

Information was pulled from https://www.satbeams.com/satellites?id=2477

Obviously this is incorrect.

The footprint image for Hylas-2, further up this thread, suggests that the orbit position they are hoping to put their satellite is around 0 deg, just to west of Nigeria.

My guess is that, at this stage, Avanti are in still in coordination with other satellite operators regarding who gets what orbit positions, so the final position is yet to be determined.

Satellite spacings of at least 4.5 deg are preferable if small dish operation is to work without unacceptable adjacent satellite interference on uplink and downlink.

Best regards, Eric.

Now apparently Skylogic will not get Conecssion from Iraqi MinCom for Ka-Band services over N-. Iraq through beam 82, why would Avanti get it though for Ka-band services through Hylas-2 ?

Avanti-Hylas has much superior coverage over the whole of Iraq so I would recommend Hylas 2, once launched sucessfully !

KA-SAT has just limited coverage of the area to the North East of Al-Mosul and Kirkuk (beam 83).

More details of the alternative coverages:

https://www.avantiplc.com/sites/default/files/hylas2_1.pdf

https://www.satsig.net/tooway/satellite-dish-pointing-ka-sat-tooway-europe.htm (beam 83).

Incidentally, has anyone experience of Tooway in North East Iraq ?. I want to know the actual position and size of that beam, versus dish size.

Where is beam 82 actually pointed ? UAE ?

Best regards, Eric.
