Title: HX50 bandwidth Post by cpippin11h on Dec 1st, 2011 at 12:25pm
Hello,
I've seen a lot of people seem to get results from this forum, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Having issues with bandwidth from our HX50 setup. We are in Afghanistan on the W6 Satellite. My signal strength is consistantly between 92 and 94. We are on the Corporate 2000 Premium package, being shared by 11 users. Testing while hooked directly to the modem, we currently average around 400k-600k down and 120k-170k up (taken over the course of a week). According to the package it should be able to burst to 1200k/256k peak and 2048k/512k off peak. Non-contended is 900k peak and 1200k off peak. The highest dl rate I have received after a week of checking is 890k once. The highst ul rate I have received is 180k, again once. Both were during off peak hours. Any help tweaking the system would be greatly appreciated. If I need to post any additional info, just let me know. |

First step in the troubleshooting process of an otherwise viable connection is to use a speed test server that's configured to deal with satellite connections. Latency and compression algorithms associated with sat connections have been known to fool servers that are otherwise configured to test terrestrial connections. It's always best to use the test server either provided by or recommended by your provider.
Second, eliminate the router from the equation. Connect one known good PC directly to the modem and test with a server known to support satellite connections. //greg// |

Dear Sir
Greg is right about the speedtest and we recommend you use our speed test located on the Bentley Walker web site www.bentleywalker.com speed test (under support section) , I am assuming you are one of our customers either directly or indirectly anyhow please do 3 tests and send me the results , anthony@bentleywalker.com |

Thanks for the replies. That is what I have been doing. Connecting my computer directly to the HX50 modem and testing my bandwidth using the BW speed test site. Doing a series of tests today to show you what I'm talking about. Will email you the spreadsheet later today.

You are also welcome to use my speed tester at https://www.satsig.net/speed-test/speed-tester.htm
If you want to run this tester several times it is important to click the link lower down on the speed tester page to avoid your test being made with a cached copy of the page.. The speed shown is affected by the speed of the satsig server, the speed of the terrestrial network network and the speed of your final satellite link to your site. If you are with Bentley Walker ask about their turbo accelerator software. This runs on your PC in conjunction with a similar compression filter at the teleport hub. I tried it and for very large plain text (log) files the compression was between 12:1 and 19:1. For images much depends on the quality of the original image file and your quality setting for receiving pictures. A large high resolution image can be compressed to fair/low quality by perhaps 40:1. If you want perfect download image quality there is no compression. There is no compression for video downloads. My review here: https://www.satsig.net/traffic/acceleration.htm Best regards, Eric. |
