The Twoway satellite has very high speed download carriers (about 70 Mbit/s) and many customers share. The download transmission is continuous but the stream of data comprises packets of data intended for each customer.  Your modem extracts only the data intended for you and all the data for other customers is ignored and lost in your modem.

Your uplink path to the satellite is also shared, but in this case each customer site transmits occasional short bursts of data, which must not overlap (in time) with bursts going up from other sites.

The KA-SAT satellite is new, with 15 years lifetime ahead ot it, and it will be several years before the beams start to fill up, so for the time being you should hardly experience any slow downs due to traffic congestion.

Because the main application of KA-SAT is internet access the design assumes far more download traffic than upload traffic.  If you are attempting very large file uploads then expect speeds much lower than the download speed.  e.g. 10 Mbit/s down and 256kbit/s up.  See your tariff options for your particular bit rates.

To keep the service cheap for domestic users, several thousands of customers will share the same satellite resource, e.g. 3000 customers sharing 70 Mbit/s.  To ensure fair sharing according to amount paid, Mbyte limits are applied to download amounts as well as 1 second averaged speed limits like 10 Mbit/s.

Business users can pay a special tariff for dedicated service, for example for uploading a continuous stream of TV video and sound data from an outside broadcast event (sports, news etc).
