SNMP and Orion (SolarWinds)

Does anyone have experience with using Orion (Solarwinds) and iDirect SNMP (snmpsvr)?

Why I ask:

I am presently trying to pilot SNMP to Orion (server host).  I have done the necessary mods to the snmpd.conf and para_cfg.opt files to point traps to Orion. We are getting information from the NMS, but all we are seeing are the basics from the NMS (vitals of eth0, lo, and server utilizations)....nothing else (no remote data, pp data, nada).

I am certain that we are lacking that MIB.txt file but I am not certain how that file is injected into Orion.  Anyone have any real world experience they are willing to share on how to unload the MIB into Orion?

For clarity:

We have been successful in pointing the traps to the host (Orion), just not seeing what we thought we would be seeing.

Also, iDS is 8.0.2.1

Dear Mike,

I havent used snmp feature with iDirect platfrom but once I installed and used Orion SNMP products in the past. Unfortunately its uninstalled now but as far as I remember you should have mib file with extension .mib . You have to compile this mib file with the SNMP software. I actually use SNMPc from castlerock (https://www.castlerock.com/) and satisfied with their software (not for idirect but for other satellite terminals). In SNMPc you should compile the MIB file from the vendor it should same in Solarwinds too. In fact all SNMP softwares are identical in basic SNMP features like get, walk. If you want to try SNMPc, you can download it from Castlerock's web site. I can assist you on this software since I am very familiar.

I hope this helps.

Hi Mike,
Just to let you know the .MIB file for iDirect traps actually comes renewed with each and every software release, if you configure SNMP take care to update your SNMP client if you upgrade.
The MIB file is stored under the SNMP folder in the NMS.

I made a copy of that MIB.  I just need to import it into Orion.  I think i need to build a custom MIB poller in Orion.  Just didnt have time to dig into it on Friday.

Thanks,

M

Dear Mike,

I just had a look at Solarwinds web site for your requirement and found that page :

https://www.solarwinds.com/NetPerfMon/SolarWinds/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhe...

I think you should look at "Importing Custom MIB Pollers" and "Assigning Nodes or Interfaces to a Custom MIB Poller" topics in help pages.

That page and similars should come with the installation package as well.

I hope this helps.

BR,
Huseyin
