Virtual March on EU referendum |
| From: DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT
http://www.democracymovement.org.uk Virtual March for a Referendum Tuesday 4 March 2008 This coming Wednesday, MPs will be debating and voting on whether there should be a referendum on the EU Constitution / Lisbon Treaty. This is a key moment in the campaign for a referendum that the Democracy Movement, together with other pro-referendum organisations, has been waging over the past months. Please will you take two minutes to help us ensure MPs honour their manifesto promises made at the last election to give us a vote? On Tuesday 4 March, the day before the vote, the DM is organising a 'virtual march' on Parliament to remind MPs of the strength of feeling among their constituents for a referendum. Please help to spread the word by passing this e-mail on to your friends and contacts. |
WHAT TO DO: On Tuesday 4 March, please send an e-mail to your MP. The easiest way to do this is by visiting our 'ReferendumList' campaign website - just follow these five quick steps: 1. Visit our site at http://www.ReferendumList.com and start by putting in your postcode; 2. You will then see a page showing where your MP stands on a referendum, and how he/she has voted in the various debates in Parliament on the treaty; 3. Scroll down the page and start the process of sending your MP a message by entering your contact details; 4. Below that, select how you would like to be kept informed about our campaign, if at all; 5. Click the 'Write your message' button and you will then be forwarded to an independent site 'WriteToThem.com' to complete and send your message to your MP. |
WHAT TO SAY: It is now too close to the vote in Parliament to ask
your MP questions about their stance and obtain a response.
So your e-mail should simply state, in your own words, that if your MP votes
against your right to have a say on the EU Constitution / Lisbon Treaty that you
were promised at the last general election, then they will definitely not have
your vote when they come up for re-election.
Many anti-referendum MPs simply cannot afford to ignore the potential loss of
votes. This is because they are only clinging to their seats in Parliament by a
relatively small majority.
While the influence of the government whips is undoubtedly strong, we can be
sure that the desire among many MPs to keep their seat in Parliament will be
stronger.
That's why your e-mail can make a difference. Please join in if you can, and
circulate this e-mail around your contacts to ensure as many others as possible
join in on Tuesday too.
Thank you for your support.
