Indian Ocean Region coverage:  Example Vipersat service from Global Teleports for internet access from Cyber Cafés or Business offices in Asia.

Your requirement:
You want to connect several sites such as cyber cafés, branch offices or businesses.    Each site has several PCs and VoIP phones.  You want dedicated capacity, so any congestion is under your own overall control.

How it works:
Using one of our worldwide teleports hubs we provide a backbone connection to the terrestrial backbone fibre internet.  In this case the teleport is in Adelaide, Australia.

The NSS-6 satellite beams are illustrated in the coverage map.  Each beam may be interconnected or cross-strapped in the satellite so that, for example, VSAT sites in the India beam may be connected to the teleport in the Australia beam and vice versa.  Thus we are able to serve VSAT terminals throughout the Indian Ocean Region area.

To make the service viable we need to make up a minimum 1 Mbits of dedicated satellite capacity.   Some service providers with Gilat, Hughes or LinkStar technology offer such a service simultaneously to very many home user sites thus allowing very low price per site, but with limitations on throughput due to congestion. Note that however the system is configured the total revenue from all the sites must cover the basic satellite cost which is about $7000 per month per Mbit/s.

Our technology is suited to groups of just a few sites, normally businesses, either a single large office or a group of several smaller offices, such that the total makes up a viable network.

Solution:
Each site is provided with a Ku band 1.2m or 1.8 diameter satellite dish, outdoor 3 watt TRIA (Transmitter, Receiver Integrated assembly) and indoor ViperSat CDM570L modem.  The CDM570L modem may be configured with BPSK, QPSK, 8-QAM or 16-QAM modulation. Its internal IP router comes with traffic QoS plus header and payload compression.

Out-link carrier:  Shared 1024 kbit/s carrier shared across all four sites.
Return-link carriers:  Dedicated 128 kbit/s carrier from each site.

These bit rates are just illustrative examples to help explain how your network might be configured.  We can do any bit rates between 2.4kbit/s and 10 Mbit/s.  Carriers may be also be time shared and changed either rapidly (every few seconds) or less frequently, such as minutes, hours or days, but keeping within the total satellite capacity purchased.  e.g. disaster contingency, nightly file back up, CCTV, events, news gathering etc.

VoIP phone service may be implemented using VoIP phones.  PCs may be connected using ethernet cables or wireless LAN.  Each site has 253 IP local addresses available.
Anti-Virus: A hardware solution is available from Guardianbox to stop spam, virus and spurious traffic.

Indicative Prices:

Equipment:
1.2m dish + mount, 3 watt Ku band TRIA with 14 GHz BUC, PLL universal LO  high stability / low phase noise LNB.  Vipersat CDM570L modem router.
Equipment cost: approx $ 7000 per site

Monthly satellite charges:
$ 7000 per month per Mbit/s.  Possibly half this, if you choose large dishes.

89cm or 1.2m dishes will work well in most locations but we always prefer to recommend 1.2m or 1.8m antennas and high stability Phase Lock Loop (PLL) type TRIA in order to enable higher order modulation techniques and thus reduce monthly charges, subject to on-site testing.

Please explain your requirements and request price quotation.

More examples:

10 sites sharing a 1 Mbit/s continuous outlink and each having a 50kbit/s SCPC return link would need a total of 1.5 Mbit/s satellite capacity or $10,500 per month ($1050 per site, each with 5 PC and 1 VoIP phone).

5 sites sharing a 1 Mbit/s continuous outlink and each having a 100kbit/s SCPC return link would need a total of 1.5 Mbit/s satellite capacity or $10,500 per month ($2100 per site, each with 10 PC and 2 VoIP phones).

30 seismic monitoring sites: Each site transmits 10kbit/s. One 50kbit/s outlink carrier controls equipment at all sites. Total 350kbit/s $2450/month.

Traffic load:

The amount of satellite capacity assigned to your system is a trade off of your budget versus the traffic demand from the end user PCs and VoIP phones. A VoiP phone used constantly needs about 20kbit/s each way all the time, 40kbit/s in total, equivalent to $280 per month.   A virus on a PC, or 'greedy' applications like MP3 file sharing may quickly overload a network. The long term average traffic per PC may vary from under 1.5kbit/s to around 75kbit/s, with 10kbit/s - 20 kbit/s being typical.  The pricing examples are based on 20kbit/s.

The use of security hardware, like Guardianbox, to protect each local LAN from virus and user abuse is strongly recommended.

Lower monthly costs & higher CAPEX

Operation of  higher order modulation methods such as 8PSK and 16QAM requires large dish sizes but will reduce monthly costs by 1/3 or 1/2.  We are keen to try this for you but feasibility is subject to case by case testing and optimisation.

Delivery and Installation:

The customer is responsible for shipping charges and any import taxes and licences.  The customer is responsible for equipment mounting and set up.  Advice and instructions will be given.  The customer is responsible for connecting up their local area network cabling, VoIP phones and PCs.  Guidance will be provided regarding IP addresses, subnet mask and gateway router settings.

Prices and text above does not comprise an "offer for sale".  Prices, terms and conditions will be subject to a negotiated contract with Global Teleports.
