Traffic analysis for web pages like: http://www.satsig.net/ivsat.htm |
The group of five web pages: ivsat.htm etc, refer to broadband internet via satellite access services and provide satellite beam coverage maps for all parts of the world. The number of page reads and also the number of pages made favourite each month are recorded.
Page reads: These include spiders and search engines, causing an over count. I did not have clever log file analysis software to identify the number of unique human visitors until Dec 2005 when I tried using web analytics from Google to count visitors - see first graphical results below. You can sign up to the Google Analytics using the link below - You enter your email and are put on a waiting list for an urchin tracker access code. They were rather busy to start with, in October 2005.
Favicons: When anyone makes any of these web page a
favourite or bookmark, a favourite icon with a non-standard name e.g. called
favicon2.ico, is downloaded. The number of these favicon file
downloads is counted, in addition to the number of normal page reads to get some
idea of how many new people each month like the page. It is possible to
use a non-standard favourite icon file name if you insert a line like that below
into the html header area. You also need two copies of your favourite icon file
on the server, one must be called favicon.ico, the other is called favicon2.ico
in my case. Having done this, in your web log analysis you simply count the
number of hits to favicon2.ico.

</head>
Note:
Some browsers always call for the favicon.ico. This causes an over-count.
Some people have Internet Explorer set with an advanced setting turned OFF (I
think it is called "enable visual styles on buttons and controls in web pages").
This causes an under-count. IE does not reliably show the favicon.
