WAFSAT

WAFSAT is to be a high-level knowledge-sharing forum on satellite communications: Abuja, Nigeria 23-24-26 Nov 2005

High-level participation from a range of different industries in West Africa has been confirmed for the major international satellite communications conference – NewCom WAFSAT –to be held at Meridian Hotel, Abuja, over 23-24 November. Representatives of the oil exploration and petroleum retail distribution industries, together with the food manufacture and distribution sectors, have confirmed their participation.

NewCom WAFSAT will feature a highly detailed and focused programme designed to examine mission critical issues in the global satellite telecommunications product and service marketplace as they impact the deployment of satellite and satellite hybrid-based communications solutions across the West Africa region.

Confirmed speakers from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, Shell Exploration & Production, and Chevron Texaco, will address issues relating to the use of Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) satellite technology in meeting the essential communications connectivity needs of the exploration, production and distribution modes of the oil sector.

Similarly, representatives from Cadbury Nigeria and Nestlé Africa will examine how satellite-based technologies satisfy the key communication applications requirements of the food industry in terms of both its production and distribution phases.

Key trends in the policy and regulatory arena within individual national administrations, and across the administrations which collaborate and

coordinate within the West African Telecommunications Regulators Assembly (WATRA), will also be examined at NewCom WAFSAT.

National administrations within WATRA have recently engaged in the development of a series of draft satellite regulatory guidelines which seek to promote the harmonisation of regulatory reform throughout the West African region.

The regulatory dialogue will greatly benefit from the confirmed participation of the Chief Executive and Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), Ernest C. A. Ndukwe, who will deliver the NewCom WAFSAT Opening Address. Under his leadership the NCC has become recognised in the international regulatory community as one of the most progressive African regulatory administrations, having developed and introduced a series of significant regulatory reforms.

NewCom WAFSAT Conference sessions over the two days will reflect these moves towards West Africa’s own empowerment, and will include a Regulators’ Roundtable; an examination of liberalisation of satellite service markets; analysis of the voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over satellite application; an evaluation of the satellite communications marketplace in terms of service profitability and state-of-the-art technologies; and, appraisal of the application of satellite communications to the connectivity needs of the public and private sectors. Speakers will also be asked to address the all important question of the moment: Does broadband satellite make sense for West Africa?

The two-day conference programme ( 400 kbytes WORD document) , taking place on 23-24 November, will be followed on 25 November by two full-day training courses, certified by the Global VSAT Forum:  VSAT Installation & Maintenance  and Satellite Business Sustainability
