Wireless LAN radio is a way to maximise the use of expensive VSAT bandwidth

Wireless and satellite internet communications complement one another to provide a cost effective solution for internet access.

Having multiple VSAT terminals is expensive.  Using wireless backhauls, wireless access points and wireless client devices, reduces costs for VSAT operators and service providers by extending their range of operations.

In a typical configuration, a VSAT provides the backbone satellite internet connection and is connected immediately to a wireless access point to create a Wireless LAN.

The wireless access point is positioned typically on a high building or mast and has a sector or omni-directional antenna providing point-to-multipoint coverage in a Line of Sight or Near Line of Sight condition to multiple customers equipped with wireless client devices and directional antennas aimed back towards the wireless access point.

End user customers may range from large businesses to individual residents.

smartBridges is a leading provider of IEEE 802.11 a/b/g standards-based outdoor fixed wireless LAN networking equipment, offering intelligent, long-range and reliable wireless solutions that may be combined with satellite internet terminals.

Their Nexus range of products operate in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz and 5.x GHz ISM and UNI-II frequency bands using IEEE 802.11 a/b/g standards.  The Nexus family of products provide seamless end-to-end connectivity ranging from wireless backhauls to access points and end user client devices.

More information, provided by smartBridges,  is given below about the features of their equipment and about their company

Benefits & Applications:

  • Faster Return on Investment (ROI) on VSAT bandwidth
  • Offer value-added services triple play applications such as VoIP and video:
A WLAN has a much lower latency of 30 mms per ping versus 2 seconds per ping on satellite
  • High bandwidth: Up to 45 Mbps on the backhaul and up to 6 Mbps on the client device
  • 24/7 operation, extending service hours of Internet cafés
  • Bandwidth Management: Upstream/downstream throughput can be configured to optimize bandwidth and provide different Service Level Agreements (SLA) to each subscriber
  • Profile Manager feature allows different bandwidth settings to be set for each customer according to the time/day, allowing ISPs to discount bandwidth during off-peak hours
  • Rapid deployment with no cabling required:  smartBridges radios are designed for rapid out-of-the-box deployment and built for the outdoors with a temperature rating of -45ºC to +60ºC

An ISP/Internet Café buying VSAT satellite internet connection can share the cost earn revenue by providing 24/7 Internet service to immediately neighbouring residents and businesses with local wireless access points

In this image, the VSAT satellite internet terminal, in the top right corner, is accessed via wireless links to provide a variety of services including: Voice over IP (VoIP), remote camera surveillance, wireless hotspots, large and small offices and private houses.

Once terrestrial optical fibre comes to town the VSAT becomes redundant and the entire network may be seemlessly transitioned to a cheaper terrestrial internet backbone connection.

To extend the WLAN coverage even further, long range backhauls can be used. The VSAT connects to backhauls which form point-to-point links to connect isolated businesses, villages or towns. At the remote end, the backhaul will be connected to an access point which will serve the customers as already described.
