Title: Direcway and Remote Access
Post by F. Chandler on May 28th, 2004 at 3:10am
I have Direcway 4000 that is working fine.  My issue is that I need to service a distant computer using vpn.  I have installed Real VCN.  It works fine on my LAN, however I have not been able to get a connection via internet.

I suspect that the proxy is the problem, or the fact that the gateway to internet is the Direcway server.

If someone has solved this I need to know how.

The problem is not so much proxy, as it is with latency and IP resolution. Direcway doesn't actually even support VPN for their DW4000, but you can make it work - barely. You have to have a static IP address and decent VPN software, but even then it is reported to be much slower than VPN over dialup.

This

and this

might help.

I have a direcway 6000 and I use the Cisco client VPN software to connect to work.  It does work but very slow
sometimes it works better if I remove the proxy settings
but still very slow

I have used both the 4000 and 6000 professional service.  I am currently using the 6000 residential and VPN-Secure client software works on it.  It is about as fast as a slow dial up on VPN.
The best way to get VPN dial up speed or better with direcway is to get the 6000 professional service.  It will cost you about $30.00 more a month but it works well.
Unlike a lot of folks I am pleased with my service and after 3 years I used to the quirks of Satellite broadband.

What is considered "decent VPN software"?  I have a Direcway 6000 modem & can't connect to my company's VPN.  My girlfriend can connect to her company's VPN through my Direcway 6000 okay.  She says its about half as fast as her cable modem.  She has SecureClient software.  I guess my connection is through Windows XP.  Does anyone have a suggestion on what I should do?

Thanks,
Ed

I'm currently setting up a VPN/Citrix connection over a Direcway 7700 system. Results so far have been very good. As good or better then my 16-21kbs dialup connection to a Citrix server. I'm connecting the VPN to a 2003 small business server Premium version. Citrix version is Presentation ver. 4. My client laptop is XP Pro. I've thrown in some complications like running a VMware Win98 published application on the Citrix server connecting to our business ERP system, but the 7700 system seems to handle everything very well so far in this beta test phase. To date this combination has exceeded my expectations, but I dont expect any VPN connection over satellite to get any better then dialup with my current setup. There are some high $$$ hardware solutions advertised, but have never heard of a sat. VPN connection better then dial connected speeds.
