Title: Question on the dw7000S's latency.
Post by eyebal on Sep 26th, 2007 at 4:12am
I've been contemplating getting an upgrade from my 7000 to 7000s, but I don't know if it's really worth it. I've heard that the improvements were marginal, however my plan right now costs $90 whereas the new plan will cost $70.

I'm also an avid gamer (yeah I'm one of the million some odd who were dispointed since they had no choice BUT to get Satellite, and I heard that the new 7000S offers latencys of around 200, which would be an awesome improvement over my 999+ latency I get now.

My current plan is the professional or whatever

500kbs down
50kb up

and the new plan, which costs less is,

1mbs down
200kbs up

Would the transaction be worth it?

You heard wrong about the latency. Do the math; it's at least 22,300 miles to the satellite, 22,300 back down - then your packet goes out into the internet. It comes back, goes 22,300 miles up to the satellite - then 22,300 back down to you. Call it 90,000 miles. Divide the speed of light into that, and you get about 480ms. And that's without overhead delays, switching delays, processing delays, et cetera. Figure on around 680ms or slower.

Your potential new plan will obviously have faster throughput, but that won't do a thing to the latency factor.
