Title: BGAN inmarsat
Post by HVYMTL on Nov 3rd, 2007 at 2:50am
I would be interested in opinions and experiences with this product, and various service hub providers. I have an interest in use as a temporary vsat connection for small 30-50ft yachts use, at anchor.
Would these units work with single anchor point, or a anchor at each end? It would still would have to deal with P.E.A movements.
Any experience on actual hands on use would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Very expensive, Slow speeds,

There are other technologies out there that would be better, Are you opposed to having an actual dish on your boat, some are pretty concealable, some not.

We do offer COTM ( Communications on the move) Also there are auto deploys out there that you push a button and  the dish aquires on its own, Takes about 2-3 min.

We have clients as I posted, on a small boat, and a seatel or  like unit upfront cost is out of cost range for them.
They will be mobile around the Virgin Islands, needing data and voip or cell connections.
They will be full time on boat, have the following needs:
several children needing data download for school lessons.
two adults needing VoIP or cell services for business.
General area will be BVI & Us VI, as well as some other areas within the islands.
Maybe a sat/phone with laptop data service might be  solution?

any info would helpful

thanks,

Tom

When upfront cost needs to be low, your options are limited to Iridium and BGAN. Iridium gives you voice and very very slow data connections. Iridium can be used for DATA but only for things like email, SMS or fax. BGAN has low (around $2 to $3 K) unit cost for new units or you may want to rent a terminal to see what works for you. Renting for a few weeks would give you your real cost as you would get a terminal and would be paying for airtime. You can even put monitors or stops on the airtime so you don't spend too much.
