Title: Redboot issue and creating space in iDirect flash
Post by koloman on Feb 12th, 2008 at 1:46pm
hello guys

this is another big one i just discover and i want help's to solve this out. i believe most of us learn alots from this forum from other people experences and the way out and i must say a Big thanks to every one out there who have contributed in one way or the other in solving problems.

i have two idirect 3000 series and they have this problems.

the first modem happens to freeze doing installation at a site and when i enter into the modem with hyperterminal i noticed this modem do not boot -up.

this modem do not exceed the Red boot prompt and when i typed >>>> fis load Linux  then  >> exec manually it never boot.please do any one know how i can reload the Linux or any commend to reboot this very modem at this state.

secondly the second modem takes another daimension after loading 8.0.1 pkg manually sent by mail to enable me activate a new site, the modem freeze and when i enter by hyperterminal to check the error massage, it displays >>> no more space in this divice << other effort to reload pkg or flash the modem was not posible as the modem keeps saying >>> no more space in this device <<<

generally this modem do not allow me put any file into it any more due to insufficient space in the flash. i have enter the modem tru winscp and i discover there is no option file in the modem due to the space limit reached when installing a new file at first. i tried puting in another file tru winscp and the modem never takes it saying  >> no more space in the device.

i wanted deleting some files or folder in the modem tru winscp to create more space but i dont know which file or folder should be deleted to create space for other applications to enter into the modem.

please do any one know how i can go about deleting the right files and folds in iDirect flash to create more space or if there are other ways and solution to help solve this out.

please i need your help to fix this two Modems, cos i am in a big shit here.
you can mail me or live chat with.

1st Modem: What indication leads you to believe that it is not booting up?  On console, what are you seeing?

2nd Modem: When you loaded that 8.0.1 pkg did you load the required 8.0.1 cumulative update first?

thanks for asking this.

the first modem display this line below why booting and never go beyound this line.

==executing boot script in 5.000 second -press <space bar> to abort.
RedBoot> fis load Linux
RedBoot>exec
using base address 0x01600000 and length 0x00100000
** command abort -illegal memory access

the last line above state the error massage why the modem is trying to continue boot process.i try to boot Linux by typing this same command but there is still no respond.

for the second modem, its was a new site i loaded remote upgrade pkg.,cummunative update and remote pkg for 8.0.1 successfully but when i wanted load the option file a pop-up came up saying >> no more space in this device <<

to my own understading i was think the modem flash drive is filled up and needed some file to be taking off the modem and this i dont know which of them to delete off the modem for the option file to come in

That BSP (cumulative update) should have cleaned house prior to the 8.0.1 pkg being installed.  Unsure why it didnt.

Do you still have connectivity to the 2nd modem?  Can you try re-installing the cumulative update (do not reset) followed by the 8.0.1 pkg?  By the way, just how are you installing that cumulative update?  Are you using the procedure to that covers increasing the swap space, followed by the install? You should be, if you are not....

Mike

i try to use the space method on hyperterminal but still says >> device is out of space << and this brake the process to continue.

why for the RedBoot case i need conmplete command after i type > SUM < some else must follow to complete this process.

So it completes redboot?

I recommend attaching to the box with WinSCP and drill down to the /etc/idirect/falcon folder

In that folder, there will be a file called falcon.opt

Please check and ensure there is a file with that name in there.

From the sounds of it, you dont have an options file in it.  The first question I have for you, is does it get through redboot or not?  If so, does it TRY to start FALCON?

thanks TDMA mike

the modem stops booting at Redboot.
i have a feeling it has lost all the startup files.

exactly what koloman experienced,

the modem displays

==executing boot script in 5.000 second -press <space bar> to abort.
RedBoot> fis load Linux
RedBoot>exec
using base address 0x01600000 and length 0x00100000
** command abort -illegal memory access

all your suggestions are welcome.

What type of Modem is this?

NMII+?
iNFINITI?
eVOLUTION?

iDS version?

Are you certain their is an options file in it (have you looked into /etc/idirect/falcon directory to see if falcon.opt is there?  If it is there, open it with notepad and ensure the version matches that of your iDS.  These are the basics, but we need to do this investigation prior to going any further.

Even if you modem does completely boot up, you may be able to attached to it with winSCP to take a look.  On the other hand, if falcon is empty or severely corrupt, your eth0 interface on that box may not be accessible.  That is why I wanted you to check.

thanks for your support.

Figured as much.  Even though I was recommending to attach to it with WINSCP, I knew that if there was no options file in it, the likelyhood of getting into was not very good (I didnt think the ping would work either, but thought I would ask, just in case).  For all we know you may not have an image on that box either.

You may want to consider sending this one back to iDirect for repair.

I don't know if you sent it in yet.... but if you havn't... while your in linux type in     cat falcon.opt      and that will scroll the current option that is loaded in ur modem.

Also instead of using winscp... highlight entire option file WITH the correct modem SN and then type in      cd /etc/idirect/falcon/

and then     cat > falcon.opt

once you type that paste all the contents of the option file... if your using putty just right click.

Note: you must do this fast.  Odds are good if it is a corrupt option or anything it will try to reboot on you during this process.  Just watch your screen, remember the last little bit of your option file and make sure that little bit of information shows up on hyperterminal or putty or whatever your using.

Hope this helped or at least we can take the corrupt/no option out of the equation...
