Title: MA and IP problems pls help
Post by cjnukem on Mar 7th, 2008 at 5:48pm
hello all,

I am trying to set up a linkstar modem and am having trouble trying to telnet. my ethernet address on back of modem is 00.A0.94.01.3B.7F. when i try to use the windows scientific calc to get the IP out of this it gives me and IP address of 10.1.80.767. this does not sound correct. so i went to an online application and got the address of 10.0.59.127. with a mask of 255.255.255.240. however when i try to ping this it comes back with <1ms. also, when i try to telnet it it says something about a port 23 not being the right port??? i am stumped on what to do here. i know my IP has to be different than the modem IP (i think) and they have to be ibn a certain range... could anyone please try to give me something to work with... thank you very much in advance.

The subnet mask during the set up process is 255.255.255.0

It will change to something like 255.255.255.248 after it is commissioned and has its new operational gateway IP address.

During set up the modem gateway IP address is like 10.0.xxx.xxx or 10.1.xxx.xxx where last two numbers are the last two terms in the MAC address.  3B = 59 and 7F = 127 in your case.

Some modems start with 10.0  others with 10.1

Set your PC network interface so the gateway is the IP address of the modem.  Set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0   Set the IP address of your PC to something different e.g. 10.x.59.128

See here for an old linkstar installation guide 700kbytes pdf

Best regards, Eric.

thank you very much eric. that work gr8. i got to telnet and saved new bootparms. one thing that has me confused from reading other post and from knowing better as well is the ping time. i pinged 10.1.59.127 which i set as default gateway and came up with a <1ms response even though i was able to telnet so that meant i was connected to modem. shouldnt the <1ms have been more like <5-10 ?

You have just a single cable direct to the modem from the PC so I am not suprised at a ping time indicated as <1mS, 1ms or 2mS or a very few mS.

1mS = one thousand'th of a second.
< means less than.

Later, when you are connected via the satellite, you will see far higher ping times to IP addresses across the world due the satellite distance plus processing delays in the various routers to the final IP address.

Getting ping to work is a good sign.
Getting telnet to work is the next step.

Best regards, Eric.

Good luck.

Take great care never to get the rx and tx cables crossed over as it will burn out the power supplies.

Best regards, Eric.
