Title: wildblue and online games
Post by blkflagredstar on May 7th, 2008 at 4:35am
Im thinking of getting wild blue in a week or two but i can find anything on if it supports online games... does playing games lie EQ or CSs count for your upload/download limits? if you can do it is there a problem with latency?

right now im on dial up in Wv connected at 16k and nothing else is avalible here.

if anyone can help thanks in advance.

All uploads and downloads will count towards your traffic totals.  Games that involve frequent new images or new live sound/video from the server will involve much downloading.

If the on-line game requires a rapid response the speed-of-light delay involved in the satellite link will mean that your observation of what is happening will be late and your response also delayed back to the server. You will be at a disadvantage.   See explanation of satellite latency.   Speed and latency are not the same thing.   Your low speed dial up connection probably has a short latency, assuming the game server is in the USA and not Australia!

Read the WildBlue fair access policy FAP

Best regards, Eric.

Minimum calculated latency (RTT) on any GEO satellite connection is ~480ms. Factor in take-off angle, collisions, server delay on shared bandwidth systems, and actual typical RTT climbs to the 600-700ms range. Wildblue however is not typical. About a year and a half ago, they deployed some front end software that now makes 1500-2000ms RTT typical of a Wildblue consumer connection.
