For internet access, browsing etc., you will need about 500 x 15 kbit/s download = 7.5 Mbit/s download and 500 x 3 kbit/s upload = 1.5 Mbit/s upload.  Total 9 Mbit/s.  Price approx: 9 x $7000 = $63,000 per month.

Try to use a very large dish and 8PSK or 16QAM to get this price down considerably.

If you expect a significant VoIP useage then a more balanced 7.5M down/4Mbit/s up would be appropriate.

Where are you located?

Best regards, Eric.

Thank you Eric, My location is Nigeria ( west africa )

I think C-band will be appropriate for this according reply, i do i go about this. i will need a comprensive
requirements (like the type modem" Radyne comsream, Huges, Idirect") and the Main ISP. Cost implication will also be needed apart from the dish installation

C band is attractive for you since it is less susceptible to rain and you will suffer less rain outage than at Ku band.  Do make sure you are offered circular polarisation for C band, as linear polarisation at C band does not work well in the tropics due to varying rotation of the polarisation in the ionosphere near the equator. Before investing in a large dish it would be worth getting a site survey done to check that your location is not subject to C band interference from local radio services also operating in C band. Check with your radio regulatory and licencing authority.

I personally prefer Comtech CDM570L modems with Vipersat management, but that is based simply on have used them many times and had no problems.  Other modems, like Raydyne and Paradise are good also. Ignore iDirect, LinkStar and Hughes HX, as these are more suitable for small sites with under 50 end user PCs per site.  A 500 end user system needs an SCPC trunk method for its backbone connection.

Hopefully some satellite ISPs with C band beam coverage over Nigera will respond here.  You will need a modem type the same as the modems at the ISP hub, probably in Middle East, Europe or USA.  I will leave them to contact your directly with their own price quotes.

Best regards, Eric.

Sounds like a dedicated service solution is definately in order. We've found Paradise modems to be a great option as they provide some unique features such as a built in spectrum analyzer and IP module options to accelerate TCP/IP traffic not to mention a reasonable price tag.  Various modulations as Eric mentioned, will help keep the bandwidth down as well.

We have a large clientel in Nigeria with extremely low turnover.  Demand for satellite is very high and availability is currently low so we work with you on a migration path to accommodate your growth.  If you'd like a potential solution, feel free to contact me.
