Title: Looking for SkyEdge Manual
Post by bixelps on Dec 20th, 2008 at 7:05pm
Hi,
I am considering signing up with an ISP who uses KuBand and the Gilat SkyEdge IP Satellite Modem.  I have searched the internet and not found much information on this modem.  Can anyone send me the user's manual for it?  I want to learn about its capabilities.  Especially its "Auto pointing tool".  Has anyone used this tool?  Does it mean I do not need a spectum analyzer to commission this system?

I don't have a SkyEdge manual and can't point you to one on the internet.  Maybe someone will help.  You could try searching the Gilat web site (or the internet generally) and reading sales brochures.

I have no idea what is its auto pointing tool.  It may require a special dish with motor drives for azimuth, elevation and polarisation, probably coupled with a GPS receiver.  Such systems are normally used in mobile situations - ships at sea, military vehicles and such like but can be used in semi-fixed applications like satellite news gathering and transportable; but rather expensive and over the top for most people.  If that is what you were thinking about it will require more than a Gilat modem.  You will need an antenna tracking controller with inputs from GPS, the modem and the axis encoders and outputs to the three motor drives.  Manual pointing, rather then automatic applies at 99.9 % of all VSAT sites.

All VSAT modems (from any manufacturer) have an indicator LED showing successful lock on the outlink carrier plus a scaled signal quality indicator which normally needs a PC connected.  If you don't have a spectrum analyser (~$1000 to ~$50000) or cheap power meter (~$30) then the modem indicators are fine for finding the satellite and peaking up.  It may take a bit longer.  Ask the hub verbally to help you get your transmit polarisation adjusted exactly.

Happy Christmas, Eric.
