Title: Remote Access to 360E
Post by simon on Jan 8th, 2009 at 9:04pm
I've had a SkyStar 360E installed for about 18 months for my SOHO office in Greece, and I've been very happy with it. My setup is probably very normal & simple - the 360E is connected to a Draytek 2910 Router which in turn has a couple of PCs, printer etc connected either via ethernet or wireless.

Help!! Can anyone tell me what I need to configure so that I can see through the 360E to manage the router and access the devices on the LAN from a remote location? All I've ben able to do so far is ping the modem over the internet.

Any info gratefully received.

Thanks ... Simon

If you can ping over the internet to the satellite modem it sounds hopeful.  Your modem would appear to have a public IP address so that access to it directly from the public internet is possible.  Is that IP address the same as the address of the WAN port on your router?.   If not, ask your service provider if a public IP address can be forwarded to your router.

Once you can ping to your router then the problem is to do "Port Redirection" following the instructions in your Draytek manual.    If you don't have the manual it is downloadable from www.drayteck.com  Get the manual for your specific version of the 2910 router.  Forward the public IP to the local IP address of the specific PC that you want to access from outside.  Make the PC non DHCP so it stays static. Make sure that PC has a good firewall activated and long cryptic passwords for any server services running.   It is liable to be hacked for all kinds of nefarious purposes.

Note that the satellite network is not designed for substantial traffic from a VSAT site back into the internet so keep the traffic to the absolute minimum.

Best regards, Eric.

Sounds promising...

Hi Eric - I definitely have a public static IP address, but looking at the settings I screen printed from the Draytek router, its WAN IP address is one digit different from the ping-able modem IP. Over the mists of time I can't remember how or where I got this address from, but maybe I just need to set it to the correct value and Bob will be my proverbial uncle. Unfortunately I won't be there to try it out for a couple of weeks.

Many thanks for your help.

Cheers ... Simon

Try to ping to the Draytek router WAN IP address.

If that is also a public static IP address then you next need to configure your router (Port Redirection).

Best regards, Eric.
