Title: W3A dvb downlink for data and tv services
Post by Malachy on Mar 2nd, 2009 at 9:25am
I am able to receive W3A signal for the defunct GTV services in my area using 60cm dish and my signal is 40 dBw.  I am wondering whether I can use the same dish to receive data on the same satellite if possible.

Anyone who has a similar experience can assist me plz.  I am being asked to get a 200cm dish and i am unable to get that size of dish quickly and have to set up my project.

Regards

Consumer satellite TV is receive-only. Consumer satellite data services typically receive AND transmit. So the reason you were advised of the 2m requirement is almost certainly for the benefit of the transmit data signal. Yes, you may "see" a W3A signal with a TV dish. But with standard size transmitters, that same dish is incapable of getting your lower powered data signal back UP to the satellite. Any excess signal level you obtain with the larger reflector is considered rain fade margin.
