Title: Tooway Ku Band modem not locking
Post by A.Walker on Apr 1st, 2009 at 12:27pm
Some KU Band Tooway modems were found not to lock , this situation has been resolved and the NOC has made a small software change to effect a cure .

You may find the modem will take around 20 minutes to lock but the issue is resolved , please note this has not affected all Ku Band modems only a small batch was affected.

It was affecting KA band systems as well, but if you left the modem on for 24 hours the lock would eventually occur.

In our latest batch of modem, we have seen an improvement and initial lock times are now taking 1 hour 15 mins. Better, but obviously not perfect when preparing/testing numerous modems for customer installs.

Once an initial lock is established, subsequent locks generally take about 60 seconds and there's no sign of any further problems or lock delays.

Incidentally, some installers (DIY-ers especially), may get caught out during the activation process, as stage 2 of 4 displays "the modem will reboot" - but it doesn't. It then shows "Stage 3 of 4" whereby you close your web browser, but the Tooway modem will still require a physical power cycle reboot in order to initiate latest software updates and self-reboots.

After this, everything is perfect and you'll have a good connection.

Why does it take so long ?

Is it the downstream that is taking ages to lock or the upstream ?

If the downstream, what downstream frequency are you using and does this differ greatly from the locked frequency ?

If the upstream, what upstream search parameters are showing ?  Maybe different ones would be a better match to the hub ? Are Eutelsat/Skylogic helping ?

Best regards, Eric.

I can appreciate it not taking too long once the modem has worked once since it has learned the frequencies and power levels.

What about new modems ?

What Downstream frequency = ?

What Upstream search parameters:
Freq Offset = ?
Freq search steps = ?
Max power = ?
Min power = ?
Number of power steps = ?

Best regards, Eric.

We are referring to Ku not Ka Frits

Hi Anthony,

Things get mixed up a bit, I was replying on a KA post, see above (KA post).
