Title: Installing Modem Package Over LAN
Post by h1lly on Jul 14th, 2009 at 4:05pm
I would like to know if there is a way to transfer the modem package and options file from a pc to the modem and install them only using the LAN port.
I know how to do this using the serial port but can not figure out how to do it over the LAN. iSite does it but I am unsure how.
I have been looking through the forums and iDirect documentation but have not found a way to do this.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

You are correct, iSite applies package and options files using the LAN interface and connecting by IP. You can alternatively use a WinSCP client to do this as well, but I dont see any reason why you would want to do this when iSite is so much simpler. The third method would be to use a TFTP server and pull the files down onto the satellite router. There is no way I know of to load package files using the console port.

Hi Dot.
I am working on a small personal project, which as it turns out is not so small or as strait forward as I though.

Do you have any idea how to transfer the files in a similar way to iSite. I have found that if I log into the modem over the LAN that I cant stop the falcon process or transfer files.

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

Let's assume that you do have IP connectivity. In order to check this you would need to issue the command ifconfig to determine the IP address while using a console connection. Remember that it is ixp0 that you are interested in. You can then use a ping and other tools to confirm that this is working.

Next you want to start the SSH service, this is done by issuing the command service sshd start on earlier releases of code. Of course you must be logged in as root in order to do this.

And finally you would start up your SCP clinet on your PC and copy the files across. You need to sometimes create more swap space and you then need to unpack and install the files using the supplied scripts.

If you PM me I can send you the complete procedure to follow with screendumps, etc.

Personally I would try the third alternative which is to start a TFTP server somewhere and ensure the package files are there. You then connect via telnet to the modem and pull the files down. They are then automatically unpacked and executed for you.

Anyway I can help with both.

Correct as long as you are using a 3xxx modem, if you have a 5xxx you are looking at ixp1 (the 8 port switch)
apart from that dot is on the money.
