Title: newbie with dish tweeking questions, (need link)
Post by Nwest on Oct 16th, 2009 at 12:12am
Hello,
I'm new to this forum and Highspeed Satlight Internet.  I recentally had a tec come out and install my new xplornet canada highspeed connection.  Yesterday and today I have noticed a fair drop in speed, (under the 1.5mbps thats guranteed by them).  I'm just wondering if mabey my dish needs tweeking. (the dish is mounted on my shed so it is pron to shifting, I think).   I also need the link to the tweeking site that helps you aim your dish, (the site the tech used when he installed it, it refreshed every 30sec's as he tweeked it).  Also How do I tweek my dish, like what has to be adjusted?
Does weather make the connection somtimes go under 1.5mbps?  I was under the impression that they Gurantee 1.5mbps no matter what.

I don't know where you got the idea that there was a guaranteed minimum throughput speed. All advertisements I've ever seen consistently use the "up to" gambit. That's because consumer grade satellite internet represent shared bandwidth. The bandwidth is fixed, but the number of users of that bandwidth isn't. The more simultaneous users, the less bandwidth for each user. Less bandwidth = lower throughput speed.

Ok thanks greg, Mabey they don't gurantee 1.5mbps, but somthing is still very wrong.  A 600kb speed test takes forever, (oz brodband), (eventually I give up on waiting), so somthing is wrong.  Can someone please provide me with the sitlight signal strength site link, (the one that the tecs use where the page refreshes every 15sec's as they tweek the dish.)?  Is there an offical xplornet speed check site?
I See a huge drop in speed and its more than just bandwidth usage, IMHO.

If you are using the Wildblue Ka band system maybe it has FAP limits similar to Tooway, see:

Tooway FAP p1   Tooway FAP p2

If you have exceeded a limit you get severely slowed down till the sliding window recalculation, done every 5 minutes, puts you back to normal.
Find out if you can access a web page where your FAP status is showing.  Bentley Walker have done this for their customers in Europe. If not, just call your service provider and ask for your current FAP status for each sliding time period window.

Best regards, Eric.

Ok so this is very confusing for me, but I think I understand, well kinda.  I get a 430mb/day limit, however this 430mb/day is streched out over the day, and if I, lest say, download a bunch of stuff and watch a bunch of youtube in a hour or so, even though I havent reached my 430mb limit I still get cut off on download speeds until the next window opens?  This is how they keep the speeds at a good rate for everybody?  Am I kinda on the right track?
My last speed test was at 1mb so the speed is comming back up, I think.  BTW I'm in Canada New Brunswick, if that helps.
Also I called again today and they told me that they gurantee 1.5mb and up, never lower than 1.5mbps.  Mabey they havent a clue, I'm not sure.  Either way this is still better than the Rogers rocket stick which ran at 100kbps at best.
I would still love some help so I can learn all about this.  My next step is to figure out how to make a wireless connection throught my house.

If your System is similar to the Skylogic Tooway system your FAP limits may be something like:
80 Mbytes in last hour (i.e. previous 60 minutes).
150 Mbytes in last 4 hours (i.e. previous 240 minutes).
430 Mbytes in last 24 hours (i.e. previous 1440 minutes).
All recalcuated and re-evaluated every 5 minutes.  The possibility of the "next window opening" occurs every 5 minutes.   e.g. "1 day" always counts backwards from right now.

If you get a router/wireless access point for your house make sure it has an ethernet interface (as for a cable modem) and not an ADSL phone line interface.

Best regards, Eric.
