Title: Space Segment requirement
Post by corpskies on Dec 30th, 2009 at 6:06am
Hi,

How much space segment requires for point to point 2Mb/2Mb data connection.

Downstream & Upstream Modulation requires: 8PSK/8PSK.

I'm interested to get spacesegment on W6 or NSS 12 middleast beam.

Many thanks,

Jav

Get some advice from an iDirect expert regarding using iDirect modems for point to point application (perhaps 5000 series ?).

If your two sites are both in the same beam coverage and you can see your own carriers then use Comtech CDM562 CIC modems and you could configure two overlapped carriers: each 2 Mbit/s 8-PSK 3/4 Turbo FEC = 880 ksps. Total leased allocated bandwidth = 1232 kHz =  $7392 per month at $6000 per month per MHz.

With the above configuration you have the satisfaction of knowing that you are getting the lowest possible monthly cost and also saving scarce space segment capacity.

Dear Eric,

Thank you for the valuable information. Please correct if may understood rong, as per your calculation space segment require for 2Mb up and 2Mb down total leased allocated bandwidth is 1232 kHz which may cost around $7392(Both for upload and download).

Looking forward to hear from you.

With Regards,

Jav

That's right.  Amazingly cheap, but only if you can see your own carriers and use Carrier-in-Carrier technology from Comtech.

If you are talking about a backbone connection from a teleport in another different beam then double the space segment price.  You will need to lease two lots of 1232 kHz, each in its own transponder and cross strapped. e.g Euro spot to Mid East Spot and Mid East Spot to Euro Spot.   You can use any SCPC modem e.g. CDM570 or iDirect SCPC modem.

To get 8-PSK and CIC to work you need much larger dishes and PLL LNB and well backed off BUC/HPA than would otherwise be the case, such as for basic QPSK and separate carriers.

Best regards, Eric.

Thank you for your response. The two point to point link is in same city (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia).

What is your recommendation for the size of the dish. 2.4meter is enough with PLL LNB & 8Watt Buc?

Many thanks indeed,

Regards,

Jav

I suggest putting up a mast at each site and using a line-of-sight terrestrial microwave like.  i.e. no satelllite costs at all.

19 GHz ratio relay link kit might be suitable. Ask at your radio regulatory agency regarding a suitable allocated frequency, licence etc.

Alternatives:

Can you lay a optic fibre cable in the ground or along poles ?

Licence free wireless LAN ?  (possible interference)

Licence free optical laser link ?

For satellite dish sizes and BUC powers, ask Newskies/Eutelsat for link budgets.

Best regards, Eric.

I have seen something for the first time:  Eric recommending Fiber Optic cable :)

Eric's Suggestion is the best solution in this case.

Thank you for recommendation. Both the sites are in city but opposite side behind the moutains.
