Title: X5 intermittent connectivity
Post by masterblaster on Aug 25th, 2010 at 9:30pm
Greetings,
I have a strange issue.  I am running an X5 modem as a mobile remote.  The issue is that I am having is getting solid green RX and TX but no net.
In iMonitor, I see the up and downstream levels being reported, so there is Layer 1 (RF) connectivity.
Under the events and conditions screen, I show continuous UCP offset messages (not the ACQ sweeps).

I have a theory that the Frequency offset is to blame.  The offset varies widely (-800 to +2500) but I am not sure what could be causing this.  I've set it up with hard coded GPS but same issue.

One interesting note is that whenever I push a reset to the modem, it will recover (remote hello) and respond to pings for a couple of minutes.  During that time the frequency offset is around -500.  I suspect the local oscillator on board the modem is at fault but am open to any feeedback form this forum.  Thanks in advance.

1.  Is this the first remote in your network, or are there other remotes?

2. Have you considered running the wam command on the line card supporting this remote to ensure that your problem is not GPS or FSD related?  (be advised, wide aperture mode or wam, WILL cause a service interruption when used, so consider that before you pull the trigger on that command).

I am going to refrain from further questions until I hear what you have to say about the above.  I dont want to get crazy, and have you looking at DNC stability settings if you already have remotes locked onto the hub.

TDMA Mike,

Thanks for the feedback.  To answer your questions:
1. We have several hundred remotes deployed on this network.  The particular inroute that this remote belongs to has a little over a hundred remotes.

2.  I'm not familiar with WAM.  Although the RX line card aperture is currently 1720.  I can't risk an outage on the network, so WAM is not a feasible option at this point.

One other piece of vital information that I learned recently is that this particular site is running on generator power.  There is no line conditioner for this equipment.  Generator power isn't known to be the most stable power source, frequency wise, and I wonder if this is the root cause.

Thanks again

In regards to the generator power. We have had an issue of a remote running off a generator and was getting 'dirty' power and thus caused the modem to stop working correctly. The fix was to have a filter on the power input.
