Title: What does the management ip signify?

Hi all,

What exactly does the management ip mean in the iDirect 3100 modems?

Why do we insert the management ip's?

BR,
Sushil.

The management IP address is similar to a loopback address on a Cisco router in a WAN. It is the one end of a link layer tunnel between the PP and the remote.

Just to add to Dot's reply.
One thing you must remember is the iDirect 3100, is a ROUTER not a MODEM.
the 3100 has full functioning of a router and as Dot mentioned the management address is the interface on the Satellite side facing the PP at the hub location, allowing the hub (PP) to route via the 3100 and the local LAN at the remote location to route out.  hence no requirement for a router at the remote location to have a routed network over many remote sites.
This becomes more obvious when you build VLAN's etc as the interface per VLAN becomes Satellite interface IP address rather than management IP address.

The second function, and the reason the name Management IP is used on the default VLAN, is the iDirect NMS uses this IP to manage the remote in the network.

On the other VLANs it's not used to manage the remote so it's called the Sat Interface IP address.

Hope that provides some clarity...or maybe Dot's answer was easier :-)
