Post by samiraaaa on Oct 12th, 2011 at 8:41am
Hi,
Could you please let me know how I can decrease the power of a Downstream Carrier (TX HLC) in iBuilder. It can be increased, but no decreased.
please let me know if it dependents on other parameters...

Hi Hana,

Have you tried to telnet the HLC card and the you can decrease/increase the power from there

regards.

hi, thnx for reply,

yes, I know I can change it by telnet. But when HLC is resetting, it starts with the power which set in HLC Config in iBuilder. I want to change this initial power.
For example, tx power in its config is -35, I want to change it to -38 forever.

Hi Hana,

the minimum power on HLC card is -35dBm.
You cannot decrease anymore. If you want to reduce your carrier, you can put 3 dB attenuator in your TX chain.

thanks.

Hi Dear,

I talked to iDirect Support,
They told that -35 is the minimum value and can not save a number larger than it as initial power, as you mentioned.
For increasing the tx power after resetting, it should be done via telnet.
thanks a lot for your help.

Physically pad the tx cable with a few db of attenuation. Then call you sat controller to re-commision your carrier so you can provide sufficent outbound carrier for your customers. Also sometimes when you do this you will find your outbound runs more efficently.

I would suggest a 10 or 15 dB in-line pad. Then adjust the HLC line card up by 7 or 12 dB.

Modems and line cards all operate best when power levels are not near either extreme low or extreme high levels. This also gives you scope for wider in-service adjustments.

In large dish earth stations or ones with very high power amplifiers it is also a lot safer to have fixed attenuators on the inputs to amplifiers in the transmit chain so that modems operate near, but not at, the upper end of their output range. This minimises the effect of a modem being accidentally configured to maximum output and otherwise saturating the satellite transponder.

Best regards, Eric.
