Porto Mogan

Review of our holiday at Puerto Mogan, Gran Canaria.

We had previously stayed in Taurito, a few km back down the coast and on that occasion had visited Puerto Mogan on several occasions, first to walk high up on the cliffs and second to go to the Friday market. We also went on a third occasion briefly when the bus driver failed to stop in Taurito and took us to the bus depot in Puerto Mogan!.  Anyway it looked like a good place to stay and thus we came here in Feb 2017. We travelled with Thomson since they included a taxi transfer from the airport, which went via the fast motorway route and tunnels direct to Puerto Mogan, rather than along the coast delivering people to all the resorts like Porto Rico, Amadores and Taurito.

Hotel and gardens

The hotel we stayed in was the CORDIAL Mogan Playa.  The hotel area was unusually large extending almost 1km along the valley. The lower end is in very easy walking distance of the beach, harbour and market area. The hotel has an outstanding collection of tropical plants.

Beach at El Medio Almud

Access to this beach at El Medio Almud, which is the first along the coast to the south, is not safely possible via walking along the cliff road due to the traffic and no pathway.  Using the bus service is very easy as all buses along the coast can stop there, but do tell the driver you want to stop at El Medio Almud.

Walk from Porto Rico to Amadores

This is very nice walk, mainly on the flat, on a good coastal path. Distance 1.2 km.

Visit to the Sand dunes at Maspalomas

It is important to attempt this visit by going first to the Lighthouse or Faro de Maspalomas.  There is a major bus terminus here. From the bus terminal walk directly to the Lighthouse and turn left. The sands starts almost immediately. Walk along the wooden walkway for preference and then on sand for about half a mile till you reach the dunes. The dunes are well worth one visit and extend several miles. It is suggested that you aim for the headland and turn back half way as the last bit towards the town is flatter and less interesting.

Very nice with picturesque narrow streets with flowers, a square with music (sometimes) and harbour. Market day is Friday and very busy..
