Title: Help needed: Internet in Bulgaria
Post by the_artfull_rodger on Mar 11th, 2008 at 1:48pm
We need help or information on satellite systems that we can use domestically with unlimited download in a remote area of Bulgaria.  Any help with prices would be grateful.

We have several families who also need access.  Most systems seem cost prohibitive.  Any ideas ?

Regards Roger and Dawn.

There are a number of service providers with beams over Bulgaria, see Europe VSAT service coverage beams

Requests for use domestically with unlimited download cause me concern.  A domestic user typically has 1 PC, used occasionally for web browsing and emails.  The need is for short term download bit rates in excess of 200kbit/s, but with a daily average of about 15kbit/s download and 4kbit/s upload.  For a reasonable price it is not possible to allow such a customer to download 200kbit/s unlimited, as that might cost $1400 per month to provide.

The service best provided to the individual home user is a shared service.  For example 1000kbit/s download and 250kbit/s upload but shared with 50 other customer sites.  The short term download bit rates would be pleasing.  To avoid congestion the service provider must implement a fair sharing system that limits the quantity of files (Mbytes) per 8 hours, for example.  If you exceed the allowance corresponding to your tariff you are slowed progressively for the remainder of the 8 hour period.  A variety of tariffs apply for different maximum bit rates and Mbytes allowances.

Dedicated, unlimited service, has its place.  A service comprising 1000kbit/s down and 250kbit/s up at $10150 per month would suit a local mini-ISP company serving a remote community with wireless and ethernet cabes with a total of about 50 PC customers connected, each paying perhaps $250 per month.  The local ISP company has to manage the traffic to resolve conflicts between customers regarding price charged versus traffic load and can make their own fair sharing policy.

Best regards, Eric.
