WB v HughesN

We're tired of dialup and have no access to DSL/FIOS or cable. We're considering getting Sat Int. We live in southern New Jersey and house is well sited for sat. (have DirectTV and solar). I know zippo about the technology and technicalities of the hardware. After reading many of the forum topics, I'm concerned that we'll have problems, e.g, signal loss due to weather, hardware issues. I don't know what specific questions I should ask the companies and how to evaluate the answers.

Re: my work...periodically I have to send text files to colleagues, some large, some small.

How would I go about finding someone in southern NJ to talk with about their experience with either WB or HughesNet? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Don't necessarily assume your house is pre-wired to meet satellite internet standards, regardless of the provider. Each has their own list of "approved" cable and connectors. It's to your benefit to stick to those lists. What may be acceptable for cable modems and satellite TV will typically NOT meet cable and connector standards for two-way satellite internet.

Signal loss due to rain/snow/ice attenuation is a fact of life with satellite internet (as you should already know from your DirecTV experience). Accept that's the way it will be with satellite internet too, or stick with your dialup. Large text files are typically no problem, but consider that upload speeds differ among the various rate plans. Best way to discuss satellite internet first hand with a current user is simply to drive around till you see a trademarked dish. Knock on the door, ask if they're willing to share.

I use HughesNet and find that if you go to their website you can get faster tech support. I use them and generally speaking they give a better degree of response than Wild Blue.

True about SB but I always headed for HughesNet first.
Depends on your needs and what the company will offer you I suppose.
