Remote 7.1.1 installation Advice pls

Need some direction re installing remote 7.1.1 and the cumulative updates.
From the ISP I intend on using, they are directing me to a console/serial connection and lan connection. Issue some commands to extract the updates, etc and then install. Problem I have is that I am a long way from my cable that can connect the consol to serial on laptop and a long way from anywhere that may have one.
Here is their instructions...........
1. Connect the LAN cable to your PC
2. Connect the serial port of the PC to the console port of the
remote.
3. Through the console port, determine the IP address of the
LAN interface and configure you PC as a host in the same
network. You use the command
ifconfig ixp1 (for the 5000 and 7000 series remotes)
ifconfig ixp0 (for the 3000 series remote)
4. Through the console, start the Secure Shell Daemon (SSHD) by
executing the command
service sshd start
5. launch the WINSCP application and log into the remote.
6. Secure copy the cumulative package using WinSCP to the /tmp
directory
7. Increase the swap space with the following command
mount –t tmpfs –oremount, size=16M /tmp
8. Extract the cumulative update package by executing the
following
package –mx –a cumulative_update-7_1_1.pkg
rm –f cumulative_update-7_1_1.pkg
chmod 744 package_install.sh
./package_install.sh
Now you can continue and download the software package and
options file.

From another site is see the process as being much easier simply by accessing the modem using iSite 7.1.1. Their process is as follows, and is much easier for me to do given my lack of RJ45/serial port cable.

Here is their directive:
IF INFINITY MODEM
1) Use iSite 7.1.1
2) download the cumulative package to the modem (cumulative_update-7_1_1.pkg)
3) wait 3 minutes (this time is necessary to flash the modems memory)
4) download the package to the modem (remote-7_1_1.pkg)
5) wait 3 minutes (this time is necessary to flash the modems memory)
6) download the option file
7) reboot

Looking for advise ASAP. I can access the modem using iSite 7.1.1

Where your S/W or Option file Currupt.. You will need to recover the iDirect Modem (Remote).. So that procedure which they gave at 1st is a Remote Recovary procedure.. When the Remote dead/currupt..iSite will not work.. you need to use CLI to download the package and option file and install it manually..!

The 2nd procedure is normal procedure to upgrade iDirect modem (Remote) and upload new option file by using iSite.

Forgot to mention, in your case 2nd is the correct procedure. Please make sure, you received 7.1.1 Cumulative package and remote package and option file from your Hub Operator.
Please do not reboot in middle.

The first option is what I call manually dropping the software in /tmp and executing it. It is the more challenging method for an end user. Especially if you are unskilled.

As Siva said above, the preferred (and easiest) method is the second option. Use iSite to negotiate the process. The prerequisite for this procedure is to ENSURE you have an options file (for 7.1.1) before beginning. Once you start the upgrade, it is recommended that you do not stop until completed.

If you dont mind me asking, why are you re-installing? Is this a step down? Upgrade from a previous version? Or a re-install within the same iDS?

Mike, system originally had 7.1.1, but relocated to another location/different provider where the ISP wanted an earlier version for a particular sat. Did that but signal coverage was marginal so they asked me to re-point to another sat, which need the 7.1.1 again. So upgrading. There hasn't been any crash of the system.

Successful with the firmware change. So far I have never had to go through the console to recover a file.
I have a rj45/usb cable. Can that be used to access the console? For future reference and add to tool list for setups.

I believe you would require a rollover cable.

so in other words, after step 2 (selecting open, the selecting package cumulative then "Dont check versions" + "Download Image only" + "Dont reset" then start and wait for 3 mins then do the same for the remote package?

i've never done the waiting part. will try that.

Although I didnt write the recommendation it is certainly good practice to "wait" a few minutes in between those packages. I have seen the remote pkg ignored on many occassions.

Cylent,
You can see the whole process in the telnet/hyperterminal while loading the cumulative or remote pkg.
Just open a telnet session/hyperterminal before you start the process.

Once you've started loading the 'cumulative...' wait for the message ''Flash completed'' in the telnet/hyperterminal and then go to the next step. Same for the 'remote pkg'.

This way you know for sure how much time to wait after each step.
