Wildblue-telsat explornet modem compatibility

I have asked this question on multiple forums, and (no offense Vic!) gotten several different answers.

I live in a very remote island location in Northern ON Canada. We are 6 hours from the nearest town, and are island bound for weeks at a time during freeze up and break up.

We use Telesat/xplornet service. I want to have spares on hand for when things fail. I have an extra Tria and modem. The modem is from WB in the states. My question is, will this modem work with the Xplornet system without trouble. I have been told by some that it won't, others that it will.

I am currently away from the north (and the system so I can't test it) so I would like to find put before I return. If it won't work, then I would like to source a Canadian modem for a spare. Any ideas?

A Wildblue modem that was issued for use within the WildBlue network will NOT work with any other network.

Look for an XplorNet modem on eBay.ca
Note: this seller's confidence that it "will work on other KA Band systems" is incorrect. It's XplorNet-compatible only, but that's what you're lookin' for anyway.

I was afraid of that. Thanks for the link to the e-bay. I suggested that he might have better luck selling it in the US if he had a wild blue Modem. The number of xpolornet modems is quite small.

It does seem kind of silly that they won't swap!

Even within Canada (TeleSat has 4 resellers), each provider almost certainly has its own modem pool. Each modem is identified by serial number. Also - the Site ID and the packet headers lilely use a hex derivative of the modem serial number. When a potential customer initiates the registration process, the provider compares the modem serial number to his modem pool. If the number is valid, the commissioning process is authorized. Once commissioned and online, the customer's packet headers will subsequently be associated with that specific modem serial number.
