I think the cruise line and SCADA industry uses them (picocells)....but dont quote me on that.  Backhauling GSM (through picocells) has become popular these days as it allows you to drop a VSAT in an otherwise austere location (where no infrastructure exists) and enable the use of PDAs and other mobile instruments.  Backhauling has always drawn my interest and I would love to find the time to do some testing.

We did a demo recently with a briefcase sized mobile phone basestation (small rugged orange flight-case type box) with an ethernet cable that we connected to a VSAT terminal.

The idea was to provide a rapid deploy mobile phone service to serve people near to the VSAT.

You need a PC either in the VSAT LAN or at the teleport hub LAN to manage the system and allow certain mobile phones only, billing etc required.

Best regards, Eric
