FAP problem

Win XP SP3, Hughes 9000, have usage show up when computer is shut off, scheduled down loads, AV, Spyware updates and scans to run during 'free' time, still have stuff show up for down loads when I'm convinced they aren't mine.

Any help?

I've called them 3 times, results were: [1] took my lumps [2,3] they lifted the Fap, no complaints in that dept, however, I'd like to solve the problem as I'm hard of hearing and the language diffs don't help.

Yesterday, while just reading forums I picked up:

19:00 20:00 60 105.74 No 0.18
20:00 21:00 59 91.39 Yes 0.35

I checked to see if Win did anything besides the time I've set [free] for them and nada.

I'm not the sharpest arrow in the quiver on computers and am not able to figure out how to check my usage real time.

The fact you're concerned how to "check my usage real time" suggests that you DO have some concern about how much YOU are actually using over time. Is the 1 hour delay in posting usage on the Hughes site a problem for you? Or are you not aware that you can check your hour-by-hour usage online? Yes, I'm concerned. I keep a close eye on usage and am familiar w/ table, have it bookmarked.

After the 1st incident, I started shutting down my computer and keeping a log. I noticed usage that couldn't be mine, imho, going on the fact no electricity = no down loads.

I'm pretty much a creature of habit and visit the same sites daily which don't require many kbs. I'm not trying to game the system, if I need more kbs, I'll upgrade my acct, but would like to solve this prior to that.

Is there a way I can track real time usage via Windows? Any way to see where those high kbs in previous post came from? I use Firefox for main browsre, btw.

More to the story. Shut my puter off at 3:45 pm CST, I'm in Ar.

Turned it back on at 5:45 pm. Here's my useage EST:

Do you have a wireless router? Just cuz you shut your PC down doesn't mean somebody else couldn't be stealing your bandwidth. It's not a good idea to shut down the modem, they're designed to stay on 24/7. But you could shut down the router. But if you don't use a router at all, shut down the modem temporarily - and observe the effect on your online usage record.

No sir, no router. I'd considered someone being able to just get close to my dish and cabbage my service somehow, so when I shut down to check/add to log, I trip the breaker and it's all dead.

Easy to steal bandwidth from an un-secured wireless router, but not from the modem or outdoor hardware. Even though the odds are minuscule that someone is hijacking the actual satellite or cable signal, powering down the modem is the final (although not recommended) security measure. Because in addition to being the interface between your PC and the dish - the modem also powers the outdoor electronics (via the coaxial cable).

So are you saying that the PC and the modem are both powered down every time? and that your online usage record still reflects consumption? If yes, then it's definitely a problem at the Hughes end. They've got some account numbers crossed somewhere.

Yes, that's the case. I suspect they know this or else why would they lift the FAP restriction on my whining.

I can't just shut the puter down as I have my down loads scheduled for the free hours.

Is there any software or XP tool to check usage real time? If so, I could compare to their records and resolve this.

I could go up from 200kbs to 425kbs for a little over $20 a month, but it's the principle that bugs me.

Yeah, there are a few - the one I've read most about is called "hnFAPmon". I think it's still available here: https://hnfapmon.sourceforge.net/ . But I've got the 425MB plan, so never saw a need to monitor my usage. Not sure, but I seem to recall mention of a FAP monitor add-on (or extension) for FireFox too. Google may help you find others.
