Huge volume usage on tooway kasat

I have a client who has migrated from Nordnet to sat2way.fr on Kasat and already he has used up 60% of his 75gb monthly allowance in 10 days , his third party bandwidth monitor is confirming huge data transfers while surfing the net ( no movie or music downloads skype, program updates etc )

Sat2way.fr cant / wont help with what may be causing it neither can 2 computer engineers that have checked for virus's, malware , etc , he is not connected to the modem by wireless just a cable so no one else is leeching his system . has anyone experienced anything similar or could suggest what to look for next ?

Provide Sat2way with as much documented technical details as you have so they can investigate. For example, can you collect traffic counts before and after say, a specific 1 Mbyte download, or a 1 hour period of no activity at all, and show that something is wrong in their traffic recording system.

Sat2way.fr should be taking complaints like this very seriously and investigating the cause and resolving it. Complain as necessary to more senior people in Sat2way.fr and if this fails to get results, complain to Eutelsat that sat2way.fr is failing to deal with customer complaints in a satisfactory manner. Ask for arbitration and compensation.

New people thinking about Tooway on KASAT should ask their prospective service reseller how they deal with situations like this and seek reassurance that complaints will be investigated. You have a choice of service resellers (e.g. europesatellite or bentleywalker etc) and even between two Ka band satellites if an Avanti/HYLAS beam covers your area.

If you are not in Avanti Hylas Ka band coverage you are limited to Tooway KA-SAT need to search for a pleasant and helpful service reseller.

Your provider should provide you with (online) usage information. But if your provider and your local bandwidth monitor shows more or less the same, it looks you have a local problem, virus, botnet or any other program (large updates ?) running in the background using a lot of bandwidth. Try to connect a different computer for a while (not used before on the same network) and see what happens. Nordnet and sat2way.fr do not controll/monitor your bandwidth, it is controlled and managed by Skylogic in Italy.

Avanti-Hylas online usage info report. In above case you have 3GB per calender month, you can use it any time, if you pass your limit you go to up/down 64/64 kbps and 1st day of the next month back to normal speed (no hourly, daily, weekly limts).

If you pass 80% of your monthly volume, you get a warning via email.

If you want to change to Hylas (2), you have to wait till 3Q 2012, see info below.

Would seem its caused by the one laptop computer , local computer shop and myself have checked as best we can for virus, malware , rootkit etc with nothing found , possibility of LAN section problem with computer hardware , client currently wiping computer HD reinstalling OS and will give it a test on a landline adsl connection first , Two other computers on the same network using tooway returning normal usage figuers .

Client now has clean computer and all was running fine untill he downloaded updates for nero10 multimedia suite legitimate copy with licence .

This then opened a box telling him .

Since getting his updates his computer has used over 4gb in one afternoon !! this Akamai NetSession Interface would seem to be a legitimate program but can it be causing a problem with tooway ?

It seems that Akamai NetSession Interface can turn your PC into a P2P server so your bandwidth gets used for the benefit of others, for example so that your PC can be used to help redistribute 4.7 GB files to other people. My reading the above reference suggests that you have to deliberately turn off this P2P server feature. Also it seems that "Akamai NetSession Interface" runs every time you start your PC or whatever, rather like a virus or malware.

Search in Google using variations on terms like "Akamai NetSession Interface excessive downloads file transfer virus P2P malware GB bandwidth useage" etc.

Regarding large file downloads over satellite it it likely that the Tooway system uses some kind of compression of its own and it is unlikely that any extra compression would be worthwhile and it may make matters worse.

Another strange thing happend a few days ago, my client had obviously reached 100% of his monthly allowance very early in the current month and had been using the system at almost dial up speed untill the new month starts on 18/09 when his sat2way data counter suddenly went down and is now showing a monthy usage down from 105% to 77% of his allocated 75gb/month .

No communication from sat2way as to why this happend .

I think the amount of traffic during the last 4 weeks is recalculated every 5 minutes, by adding up the previous 8064 five minute periods. So what you did during the time just before exactly 4 weeks ago matters.

If you had done some very big file download just over 4 weeks ago then that amount would drop out of the sliding time window total and cause a sudden drop in the "last 4 weeks display".

The Twoway FAP is very clever and logical but takes some effort to comprehend. The Bentley Walker Hughes HX alternative of a traffic allowance per calender day is easier to understand and does get you back up to full speed at midnight every day, regardless of your previous day's amount. The HX has a free-for-all traffic period in the night also which is good for non time critical big downloads, software updates etc. Avanti-Hylas has a monthly allowance and after the end of the first day of the month you can see your accumulated monthly total so far, updated at the end of each day. You get an email when you pass the 80% mark.

I have no idea which approach is better.

Tooway Direct have just told their resellers and installers that ....

"From next week, our systems will also generate automatic emails to customers advising them of their consumption as they progress through their FAP allowances. This means even if they don't regularly log into the Customer Portal they can easily see where they are in terms of data consumption, and can vary their usage patterns if appropriate."

So not very helpfull then

My client ( 25g/ month and still trippled ?) was expecting his sat2way monitor to reset on the 18/19th ( one month since activation ) over the last 3 days it shows

17 sept 56165/75000 gb 74.89% last 4 weeks
18 sept 51887/75000 gb 68.2% last 4 weeks
19 sept 50987/75000 gb 67.98% last4 weeks

bit difficult to check daily / weekly usage when shown like that !

I agree.

If the last 4 week period threshold is not tripped (as you indicate approx 70%) then you are not being slowed down due to tripping the 4 week threshold.

if you are the slowed down state, then you may be slowed down due to exceeding the 1 hour, 4 hour, 1 day or 1 week threshold. You need to be able to access the multi column, bar graph, type display to determine the cause.

The new email system sound promising. I hope it works whenever any threshold is crossed, either up or down.

Until the 30th September, the system is only operating the One Hour and the Four Week sliding time window. That will change on the 1st October when the Four Hour and the One Week STWs will start ... also the 1Gb Volume Booster will become available as we say good-bye to the summer's triple volume deal.
