PES 5000 Manual Setup Instructions

I have inherited a poorly setup network and would like some information on how to properly setup a satellite broadband connection. We currently have a Hughes PES 5000 modem directly connected to a server. It serves as the main internet connection for all of the transaction processing here.

First, is it possible for this modem to be connected to a router, or does it have to be plugged directly into the server. Second, there is a parallel port cable running between the modem and the server. Is this simply a cable to allow for shell access on the modem. If so, can I disconnect it with no ill effect?

Finally, does anyone know of a manual for this model or a similar model modem?

Hi,

The PES 5000 can be connected via a router if needed, the PES 5000 gets its IP address from the NOC so you would need to know the range you can use, the parallel port rs232 would have been used/is used for connection to on site equipment and is not used for shell access. Access to the PES is via a rj11 to serial cable connected to the config port on the rear of the unit using DIU editor software. The PES general ref manual is a 10 meg PDF file I have a copy and can upload it to a free file server if you need a copy. Just let me know.

Doubt you're going to be able to find the big book available for download, but here's a couple links to abridged versions:

* Edited by forum admin 24/9/2014.  These old links now fail *

  comtm.com/download/install_Galaxy2.pdf
and
  evsig.com/docs/Hughes/Galaxy/PES5000%20config.doc

PES 5000 is Narrow Band equipment, you cannot do a Broadband connection thru a 5000.

Hi Again, Actually I would like to test the Hughes 2W Ku band ODU at Bench RF Test up to see the Max Power ( 2W) at Spectrum Analyser. I am not able to find any command to initiate from DIU SW to raise the pure carrier to see the power at Spectrum Analyser or Power Meter

Regards

If you are able to get the command line interface working then it might be worth trying to get the modem to tell you the list of possible commands and then try one that looks romising.

Try these to start, plus any other ideas you might have.

I have put it here:
https://www.satsig.net/pdfs/PES-General-Reference-Manual.pdf

Please note it is 10.4 Mbytes. Download once, carefully, and save the pdf file locally for future reference.

Best regards, Eric.
