29 July 2021:
Starlink satellite internet access service is now possible in parts of 12 countries. The way to find out if you are covered is to go to the web site
https://www.starlink.com/ and input your town or city and see it is possible to get on the beta program. Cost is £439 for the kit and £89 per month.
Starlink service is provided at locations with proximity to local gateway earth stations. Both you and the gateway need to be able to see a satellite simultaneously. Gateways in the USA, Canada and UK have been working for some time.
On 29 June 2021 Elon Musk reported that there were 69,420 active users.
The total number of customers is increasing rapidly with around 20,000 additional users being added in July 2021, bringing the total to around 90,000.
The price of £439 ($500) for the outdoor flat faced antenna and indoor WiFi router is high compared with conventional Ku and Ka band VSAT customer terminals but is cheap considering the phased array technology, similar to what is used on the satellites, probably costs SpaceX more than the $500 being charged to the beta program customers. As with flat screen TVs, the manufacturing costs will progressivlely come down with large quantity production. This applies to the satellites also !
